Skype & Pfsense 2.2.2
-
Gentlemen:
I am using Skype and find that Pfsense 2.2.2 causes a degraded video performance. I have tried UPnP & NAT-PMP but it has no impact. Additionally, I have read other posts with respect to Skype and Pfsense. No one seems to be able to get Skype to work correctly. I would appreciate any new insight and explicit steps that will resolve this.
Thanks for your input.

What is the Skype diagnostics screen reporting when you are connected?
UDP/TCP?
Relays?
Local:Remote? How degraded are you seeing the video?
I find mostly Skype works just fine with no special settings at all.

Thanks for the reply. On the Skype Call Quality Status it sows UDP Status local bad and remote good. I do have UPNP configured in Pfsense and it show it is operational with port 3345. I do not know how to solve the udp issues with Skype. We like Syype but is the deveil to get operating with out issues behind a firewall.

Just a thought: Have you tried setting your Skype listening port(s) statically? (Options/Advanced Settings/Connection). Skype generally tends to use every port under the sun unless you limit it specifically. This still wouldn't account for degraded or slow performance, unless you're blocking outbound ports on your firewall config or doing some kind of traffic shaping.

If you're using UPnP then it should be opening the port and forwarding the traffic no problem so it should be able to use UDP directly.
However my own experience is the that the local:remote good:bad status changes seemingly at random!
You might want to run a packet capture to check that traffic really is being forwarded correctly to your Skype client.Steve

Thanks for the kind updates. I have just had success by turning on UPNP in Pfsense for port range 1024-65535 which is the range that Skype indicates it may use. I showed udp status as good now. Let's see how this operates for a while. I have been trying to short this out for a week. Skype is great but they could use a update of the client software.
