New (and first) pfSense Build

  • Hi,
This would be my first pfSense build, so I'll appreciate your comments and feedback. I have a limited options when it comes to hardware due to where I live. I've also got a 8mbps internet with 10-20 users, with a limited quota. Aside from security, bandwidth control and monitoring/reporting is the main use for pfSense. QoS for gaming consoles as well…

    Here's the HW:
    3.1 GHz - G3240 3M/LGA1150 (or G3220?)
    MSI H97M ECO (DDR3) (LGA1150)
    2x Kingston HyperX Fury Black Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 1600
    2x STLab N-313 Pciexpress Gigabit

I'll throw an SSD and a 450W PSU I've already got

    Thoughts? Ideas?

  • MSI H97M ECO (DDR3) (LGA1150)

1 GB LAN Port intel I218V

    2x STLab N-313 Pciexpress Gigabit

1 Intel Dual or Quad GB LAN Port Ethernet PCIe adapter or
1 Intel I210-T1 Ethernet adapter (one GB LAN port)

    and a 450W PSU I've already got

    250 W or 300 W are enough or?

  • Thanks for the feedback. As I said, I have limited options when it comes to hardware. I'll try to find a dual/quad ports card, but are the CPU/RAM enough to cover my requirements?

  • but are the CPU/RAM enough to cover my requirements?

Yes of course, also a G3260 with @3,3GHz would be nice to play with.
And 8 GB RAM is enough for pfSense.

How many it would be cost all together as you count it?
From where you are? From the USA?

  • http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/N3700M/ (get the matx, more pcie slots)

    8-16gb ram ddr3l

add a intel dual nic card from ebay (or 2x 1gbe intel cards)

  • The above, excluding the case/psu/SSD would go for around 300 USD. I am in Lebanon, hence my limited options. I might be able to find your suggestions, but it will be time consuming. I can get the above online without wasting time hardware hunting (which I am willing to do if there's a major advantage over the above list…)
