Unable to install pfSense

I boot from my USB perfectly fine, select "single user" and wait for the installation process to begin. But after a while I get the message "Enter full pathname or shell or RETURN for /bin/sh:". When I type return I get the message "(date/time) init: can't exec return for single user. No such file or directory". I have tried formatting the USB and mounting the pfSense image again, but I get the same thing. Has anyone ever had any experience with this problem?

Is the checksum correct, assuring the file's data integrity?
md5sum sha1sum etc
How did you create this boot drive? dd is my preferred method.
Bios or UEFI?

I created the bootable drive using a program named win32imager. I have used it quite a few times and I haven't had problems with it in the past. Also my computer is using BIOS, not UEFI. As for the checksum, I'm afraid I don't know how to verify if it is correct. Could you please link me to a page that can walk me through the process?

Use that to get a file's checksum. Checksum value changes if file is different (errors, incomplete, etc) from original.
Wherever you got your pfsense file will have a file with ".md5" appended to to a file with the same name as the file you downloaded. pfsense-blah-blkeh.tar then download pfsense-blah-blkeh.tar**.md5**.

Verify that the checksum in the md5 file matches the checksum of your downloaded file.

Are you sure you downloaded the version intended to be run from a USB stick, and not the ISO made for CD/DVD installation?
Choices are "Live CD with Installer" & "Live CD with Installer (on USB Memstick)". Make sure you download the one designed for "USB Memstick"I boot from my USB perfectly fine, select "single user"
Why are you choosing "single user"? I've always used the option 1 (Boot Multi User) for installs. Have you tried that?

Return means that you need to press enter, not write Return :)
after you press return (enter) and you get into /bin/sh:#, just type exit and the installation should continue. Also, i had this issue because the HDD was using UEFI instead of SATA, check in your bios HDD configuration and see if that is the case. If you go on SATA it should install fine. -

Just press Enter for all computer related prompts until there are horrible errors, then pay attention.Good catch, NickM. :)
