Hardware for new build

  • Hi Guys

i am planning on building with super micro a1sri-2758. I just ordered my ssd (intel dc s3500 80 gig). Trying to keep this build as close to pfsense's as possible. I am trying to find memory for this but having a tough time. I would like to put in 2 x 8 gb ram ecc. If anyone has recommendations I would love to hear…Will probably have more build questions as i go..

    Thanks

    Pete

  • As today you must read the ram certification and also orientating your self on it, but the Board
manufacturers are often only test some rare ram modules, because their main business is selling
boards! The RAM vendors are often testing more board to be compatible with their ram as vice versa
and there for you can often get cheaper faster or better RAM modules by watching in their database!

In the most cases I personally will use the Kingston Value RAM series modules, they are not coming
by side with so fancy colored with an steel or aluminum heads but this RAM will work and is one of the
best I really ever got my hands on, nothing fancy but good working conditions. Please go by ECC RAM
this would be the best you can do for your board and system.

I think the supermicro doesn't work without ECC RAM. We also use Kingston for those boards and never had an issue. (except with non ECC i think)

  • Thanks. I checked out a guys build on the unraid forum and he has successfully run Kingston. I am gonna go with the ecc Kingston. Thx for the suggestions. Case ordered and will order the mb and memory next week.

With the new pfsense will I need to do the trim on ssd? And also will I have to adjust clusters on the Intel nics? Don't know if all this has been resolved in 2.2.4

Is there any chance that openvpn will become multithreaded or unlikely? Once again thanks for all the help

    Ok

With the new pfsense will I need to do the trim on ssd?

If the SSD is supporting TRIM, I woudl activate it in pfSense!

If you come on trouble you must tune the mbuf size perhaps but this should be test by you before
    you tune them up.

This would be more tends to the WAN interface that is only using one CPU Core, as I see it right
it is not pointed to the pfSense team that OpenVPN is using the more cpu cores.
