Hardware advice for new pfsense
-
I am currently running a pfsense box on some older soekris net4xxx board. As of now, I only have a 50mbit internet connection, but I am thinking about upgrading the box to support internet connection speeds from 120-200mbit, because im planning to do more TV/video streaming with a new TV device (HD, maybe UHD in the future). Also the box should be able to handle well my IPSec connection (access home network from remote places), although I'm not sure how well this is already done by my current box.
Important for me would be a fanless/passive, low-power low-heat solution.
As it stands, I see 3 options:
-
Get a SG-2220 for about 400€ (link)
-
Get another soekris, like net6501-30 for around 350€ (link)
Plus a separate SSD/storage card for maybe 40€ -
Build your own mini-itx based box which is around 330€:
1 x Intel SSD 530 Series 120GB, SATA (SSDSC2BW120A401)
1 x Corsair ValueSelect SO-DIMM 2GB, DDR3-1066, CL7 (CM3X2GSD1066)
1 x ASRock AD2550R/U3S3 (90-SXG050-A0UAYZ)
1 x Akasa Euler, 120W extern, Thin Mini-ITX (AK-ITX05-BK12UK/AK-ITX05-BK12EU)
What kind of hardware would you recommend?

Could be nice but only two GB LAN Ports, then perhaps more a SG-2240?

Definitely no! net6801 Product Range - estimated Q4 2015
- Build your own mini-itx based box which is around 330€:
Hmm, could be going, but…
Budget & DIY:
Intel Celeron G3260 @3,2 GHz
Mini ITX Board with Intel NICs
Mini ITX Case M350 (or greater for more GB LAN Ports)
Intel Quad GB LAN Port NIC
2 x 4 GB RAM
1 x SSD
But with active fans!DIY for mini ITX or 1U:
Jetway NF9HG-2930 Thin mini-ITX
Fan less!Ready to go:
Jetway NF9HG-2930 Intel Celeron Quad Core Fanless PC w/ 4X Intel LAN, 2GB, M350
Jetway Intel N2930 Network PC w/ 5X Intel LAN, 2GB, JBC200F9N-E4IN-B, ADE4INLANG
PC Engines APU 1D4 pfSense complete bundle
Fan less! -
The jetway stuff looks good.
I did not mention it, but all I need is 2 LAN ports on the box (1 for WAN, 1 for LAN) because I have a 16 port gigabit switch in place already, and all stuff is connected there anyway.
I didnt want to go for the apu boards because of the realteak NICs, I'd prefer intel NICs.

Purpose built machinery. -
No accessories to buy.
M.2 SSD, miniPCIe cards and USB to Serial cable could be also accessories, or?

Right now I'm really tempted to get myself a SG-2220 …
Does anyone know a shop in europe, probably germany, which ships to germany? All I found so far is https://shop.voleatech.de/shop/sg-2220/

Well known and super service and shipping world wide:

That's one of the reasons why pfSense sells hardware with Intel NICs now. Something like that is going to come from PCEngines (with AMD CPU), but that's still down the road. As are Soekris net6801 boxes.
The guys from Varia-store are great, worked with them in the past.
And you're not only doing yourself a favor but the pfSense team as well. #DoublePlusGood :DI haven't worked with Voleatech so I can't comment on their service.

Nope, it's more like SG-2220 starts to be available now.
At the Voleatech store you can pre-order them.
