Unable to install: getting Fatal trap 1: priviledged instruction fault in kernel
-
Hi As a complete newbie please be gentle with me :D I am trying to install from an CD and have tried all the options that are available to me. I am using an old Dell E5500 laptop to build a firewall for home use. I have checked all the hardware and it passes all the diagnostics. I read somewhere that this was linked to the harddrive but that is fine when given an extended test in the SMART software. Help please.

Perhaps a BIOS issue. Make sure it is updated to latest. Try disabling AHCI stuff, if any.

UPgraded the BIOS and set SATA to ATA and it still kernel panics, tried it on another identical laptop and it installs ok !!
NOw the install is telling me I need to bring up the WAN interface and make sure the link is up, any ideas how i do that from teh command prompt please? -

Apparently it's not exactly identical. I.e., the other one lacks the broken HW "feature".

Thanks KOM is the WAN interface going to have a standard name then?
If the interface is known, enter its name, such as igb0 or em0 and press Enter
How do I know the name to assignor is it a case of trying each one?

The name is based on the driver used, and the number is its order according to the system. The system order may not match the order listed on the hardware itself. If you have two NICs that are the same then you will have _xy_0, _xy_1, for example (the xy changes based on the NIC you are using.) You might have to determine which is your WAN and which is your LAN/DMZ.
