Restore to Dissimilar Hardware/Interfaces?

  • We have a rather complex configuration (VIPs, 1-1 NAT, FW rules, pfSync) that we would like to backup and restore to new hardware. The issue seems to be that the interface names don't match, so after performing a restore, various pages like the VIP page time out and lock up the entire web interface.

What would be the best method to restore without manually re-creating everything? Should I edit the config.xml before restoring and just manully search/replace the interface names?

That will probably will end up being the simplest solution, there shouldn't be too many entries to change (< 10?) depending on the number of NICs you have.
Just avoid using an "automatic search and replace feature" - there's invariably something like "em0/bge0/rl0/etc." embedded in base64 coded data in the xml file.
You definitely want to leave those entries alone.

What version of pfSense are you running?

    2.2.5.

Thanks for the autoreplace tip, that's probably what I would have done. I'll make sure to do it manually.
