We have a rather complex configuration (VIPs, 1-1 NAT, FW rules, pfSync) that we would like to backup and restore to new hardware. The issue seems to be that the interface names don't match, so after performing a restore, various pages like the VIP page time out and lock up the entire web interface.

What would be the best method to restore without manually re-creating everything? Should I edit the config.xml before restoring and just manully search/replace the interface names?

That will probably will end up being the simplest solution, there shouldn't be too many entries to change (< 10?) depending on the number of NICs you have.
Just avoid using an "automatic search and replace feature" - there's invariably something like "em0/bge0/rl0/etc." embedded in base64 coded data in the xml file.
You definitely want to leave those entries alone.

What version of pfSense are you running?

        -jfp

          2.2.5.

Thanks for the autoreplace tip, that's probably what I would have done. I'll make sure to do it manually.
