Hi guys, I've recently installed my new smart switch (Netgear GSS116E) and have every device attached working on their respective VLANs. I thought that now would be a good time to let the DHCP server set up a reservation for the switch's web interface. Unfortunately, when I set the switch to use DHCP instead of manually assigning it, it cannot find any DHCP servers (on any VLAN, and they're all enabled). In this state everything still functions on the switch just I can no longer manage it through the web interface. I can easily undo this and have it set manually but I'd like to figure out why it cannot find any DHCP servers.

If anyone has an insight on what I need to change in order to have the switch pick up an IP from the DHCP server, it would be appreciated!

What vlan is your management vlan?

Strangest thing, it doesn't appear to have one…

It doesn't appear under any menu, you'd think something like this would be under Management as it is in most other Netgear switches. Even the VLANs tab has no setting for the VLAN of the actual device...

Well then how would it get an IP via dhcp?  It has to have a managment vlan.. What vlan do you use to get to it when you set it static?

I would guess its zero by default, so you should be able to hit the ip from any port on any vlan.  But this might not work for dhcp??

Without knowing the configuration of pfsense and your switch its hard to say what your problem is.

It does not have a management vlan (I'm not kidding!). I would assume it's vlan0 in that case so that it can be hit on any port which explains why I can access it on a port set to vlan10. DHCP does not seem to pickup the switch on any of my vlans (10, 20, etc.). I think the switch in this case cannot be assigned to a vlan for management. Strange that it supports 802.11Q but cannot assign itself a vlan.

If it doesn't have a managment vlan, then no you can not give a dhcp address only on a vlan with a tag..  It should pick up a dhcp on any port that is native without tagging that your running a dhcp server on..

This sure seems like a ? for netgear support or a bitch session and anything to do with pfsense.. Does pfsense see a discover packet?  Is it tagged, if not how would dhcp server running on a vlan see it?

Unifi AP don't allow you to set a management vlan, they still get IP vs dhcp just fine as long as you run dhcp on interface that is not tagged..

So for example interface that I use for my wireless is vlan 20, its native vlan 20 without any tagging..  The port that is connected to the interface is trunked but the pvid is vlan 20..  So the trunk going to pfsense has a pvid of 20, the trunk going to ap has pvid of 20.. It get dhcp because in psense I just run dhcp server on the interface, while dhcp also runs on the vlans that wireless uses for other SSIDs
