Is this in the chute for 1.3?

  • forgive me i have not been following the 1.3 dev since i am very happy with what ever working version you put out.

but is there any development in the WAN accelerations department?

the only reason i ask is because this is going to be one of the most demanded things next to VOIP.
i hope that this didnt offend any one just a "general Question"

    thank you

  • What do you mean by WAN acceleration, like data compression, de-duplication, caching, etc. as found in your typical commercial WAN accelerator?

yep that about sums it up…

  • That would be nice, I'm not aware of any open source packages that do such a thing though. Are you?

For the most part, we take existing open source projects, wrap a GUI around them and integrate them into a single system. Writing a complete WAN accelerator is way beyond what we have resources to accomplish. If there is an existing open source one, integrating it isn't out of the question. I'm not aware of one though.

  • yea thats what i thought

i did do some reasearch and found this guy
    http://trafficsqueezer.sourceforge.net/

there is a down load and some info on what he does.

but i am not too sure on how well it works.

    Chase

  • Well, getting IPsec compression working would be a good start. I've found that it can cut bandwidth requirements in half if you're transmitting compressible data over the VPN.

I've actually meant to take a look at it myself, but we haven't had the need for it yet so I haven't allocated the time to do so.

Says it's "pre-alpha", so that's likely a ways away from being production ready. It's Linux-focused, but not sure exactly how it works. Something of this nature likely ties into the kernel, which means it probably won't work on FreeBSD.

yea i know that it is so far from working it is not even funny. but i was just trying to add to the pfsense platform.

    thats all.

  • If you ever find an open source project that provides reliable WAN acceleration, let us know. It's something we may be interested in implementing in the future.
