I want to set up a firewall that boots/runs off a CF card, but logs to a hard drive. I saw somewhere how to properly set up the CD Installer version on CF (without the HDD part), but failed to bookmark it, and haven't been able to find it again. I'm trying to keep the binaries, config XML and any other low disk IO on the CF Card, but be able to load modules (such as Squid) and have them write to the HDD along with the system logs. My goal is that the core firewall should be able to stay up if the HDD dies.

Thanks ahead of time for any pointers.

That would indeed be an interesting setup and a nice compromise between the lowcost embedded mode and having the flexibility and storage power of a hdd (like e.g. a Soekris net4801 with notebook HDDs). For a bunch of environments this would be an interesting alternative for setting up an (old) PC as e.g. Proxy.

Any help would really be appreciated. I pretty much just need to get a fix on what to mount read-only, and any directory name changes or other "non obvious" stuff" I need to be aware of. Also, what file systems (besides /var) need to go on the hard disk.

          –Thanks again

Pick all the defaults during installation.

After reboot, edit /etc/platform and change it from pfSense to embedded
