I'm looking to build my own 1u pfsense box and I prefer the nics to be on the front like any other pfsense unit.

Are there any motherboards and 1u rack mount cases that currently allow for the nics to be on the front, and even better with corresponding leds for their statuses?

Here's one option for a miniITX motherboard:

        http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Atom/X10/A1SRi-2758F.cfm

And a 1U chassis with front I/O to go with it:

        http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/1u/505/sc505-203.cfm

I am using this exact configuration, but I prefer the rear I/O chassis.

        Hope this helps!

and apparently that's the thing to do these days is buy that pre-packaged system. ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101837 )

Interesting. I wonder if thats what the netgate guys use when building theirs?

There is that one motherboard, the WG-X66A that comes in a nice red case  ;)

But then please make sure that the LEDs are really corresponding to the workload and not that they are
not able to use by pfSense.

The status LEDs do apply to connectivity on each interface, and there is a nice large 2x20 backlit LCD that tells me in percentage what the workload is, exactly how many kbit/mbit in and out, state table usage, CPU utilization, etc.  ;)
