      Hi

I have a strange (I think strange) issue that I would like some assistance with
I am running a dual core PC 4 GB of RAM and 200GB hard drive PfSense 2.2.6 and everything is great
I have 3 NIC cards, 1 for WAN, 2 for ISP internet and 3 for VPN connection

When I have a power outage the computer running PfSense goes off obviously, then when power is restored it powers back up (as per power options set in bios)
That's fine, I can even hear the beeps when PfSense is backup. I obtain an IP address from its DHCP server but I cannot access the internet. And I cannot ping or access the PfSense box. I have to manually power cycle the PC running PfSense 1-3 times before everything is reachable.

      Any ideas?

"When you have a power outage?"

If you ask me, your bigger issue is the power provider for your grid. I'd get a UPS if I were you.

If you have a router running onsite, it may be that it takes some time for the router to renegotiate with your carrier. I've seen this happen to internet routers connected to British Telecom (spit!) pipes. In which case you may find that if you leave your firewall running normally the connection may re-establish anyway without your having to reboot two or three times.

If you can't hit the LAN IP, something more significant than your ISP being down is probably to blame. One possibility might be if your ISP's modem hands out a private IP assignment when it's not connected upstream, and it's assigning something that conflicts with your LAN subnet, that could cause connectivity problems to the LAN IP. Outside of that circumstance, I wonder if there is also something else on your network with the same IP as your LAN IP. Especially if you're at the default 192.168.1.1. Changing that to something more obscure, just in case you have something else answering on that IP, wouldn't hurt. You should see "xx is using my IP" logs in the system log if that's the case though.

            thanks for the replies guy
I'm not concerned about power outages as they rarely happen but when they do its causing me grief

My LAN IP on my PFSense box is 192.168.123.1 so it is not "generic" by commercial router standards. I can ping that IP and if I disconnect the Ethernet cable at the PfSense NIC, I lose connectivity and cannot ping. But I still cannot log into PfSense gui which is strange. Even if I disconnect my ISP modem (which is in bridge mode) I still cannot connect. Only resolution is a hard reboot 1-3 times. I still cannot figure this out. I shut off the surge protector feeding power to ISP mode, PfSense (to simulate a power outage) and I can replicate the issue every time.

Ok that rules out the IP conflict theory.

What type of WAN do you have, DHCP, PPPoE, ? My next guess is something to do with the WAN not connecting (because the modem hasn't synced up/connected yet) is hanging up PHP, which prevents the web interface from working.

                I have Cable DHCP

I'm thinking maybe your explanation is the only logical one. But I shut the power off and then back on. and left everything for 30 minutes, and I still could not log into the PfSense box, could ping it but not log in and no access to internet.
