Intel NUC interfaces issue

Hi All,

I have purchased a Intel NUC5PPYH with the Pentium N3700 processor and added a Dlink USB to ethernet adapter for the second NIC. I installed the latest (as of today) code downloaded from the pfsense mirror (which I believe is 2.2.6) did a USB install and ran into two issues;

• The intel NUC NIC is not recognized at all
• the dlink NIC is recognized and displays a mac but when i reboot the NUC it drops off (disapears) and at boot it advises it has no interfaces

so in order to get this project back on track can i confirm/request the following;

• does Pfsense run on Intel NUC's (this would appear so based on the forums but wanted to confirm)
• how do i add a driver so it recognizes my motherboard NIC
• is there something in the BIOS causing interfaces to drop at reboot?

And is this D-Link USB to LAN adapter reported as supported in the hardware comparability list of FreebBSD
or pfSense? or better the Chip inside that is used?

32Bit or 64Bit of version 2.2.6?
Did you try out the 64Bit version 2.3?

A USB to LAN adapter is a workaround solution but nothing more as I see it right, there are other users and
they see it different for sure, but you even get what you pay for.

so in order to get this project back on track can i confirm/request the following;

An intel NUC is a statement like something likes "a car", what fuel a car is needing? So it could go with gas,
with diesel or with gasoline (benzin).

• does Pfsense run on Intel NUC's (this would appear so based on the forums but wanted to confirm)

Again all Intel NUCs are different from the hardware basis and often it could be also pending on BIOS
incompatibilities or other hardware incompatibilities. This must be seen a a single case each and not
as a general case, as I see it right.

• how do i add a driver so it recognizes my motherboard NIC

At first you should exactly to know what kind of NIC hardware is soldered inside of this Intel NUC!
Without this information it is worse trying to add a driver.

• is there something in the BIOS causing interfaces to drop at reboot?

This is more based on the USB to LAN Adapter as I see it right this will be often new
recognized and so this issue or problem is really often reported here in the forum.

Why not a small appliance and all is supported?
The SG-2220 is really fine and all is supported.
A Jetway Intel N2930 will be also in the same price range and all is supported.
A self made mini ITX and Intel G3260T@3,2GHz will be also fine running for ~200 €

So you could search now in the forum about this USB to LAN adapters and what kind of them is
working well together with pfSense. You could also try out version 2.3 of pfSense. Or to find out
what kind of LAN Port or NIC is exactly soldered on the board (onboard NIC) and install a driver
for this one. Then you coudl go with a small 5 port switch and VLANs to get it working.

Ok have done a bit more research on this…

It appears the model of NUC i have purchased has a Realtek NIC which appears to be an issue with PFsense however the i5 NUC model has the intel NIC which according to the forum does work, so I will swap the units and see how we go

regarding the dlink USB to ethernet adapter I have a working configuration of this in place with another white box appliance that is working well, agreed its not optimal and would be better if onboard but for an inexpensive non mission critical appliance (its a backdoor for a site) this is fine

so i will try the I5 and advise how it goes

pfsense 2.3 should work with NUC5PPYH.
