SSHD core dumps on connect attempt

Trying to get SSHD to work properly in pfsense on 1.2-release. Every time I try to connect the connection is closed, and messages reports "kernel: pid 8135 (sshd), uid 0: exited on signal 12".
I couldn't really find any other relevant logs, but just tell me what you need to diagnose, and you've got it (I can still issue commands via web).

running /usr/sbin/sshd -d results in
sshd[12191]: Received signal 15; terminating.

Something is seriously out of wack.  I would reinstall and if the problem persists start looking at potential hardware failures.
