Internet Keeps going down

  • Hey guys, hoping I can get some help here.  Bought new MiniITX computer (gigabyte ga-h170n-wifi) with an i5, 16gb of ram and dual intel on board and an Intel SSD.  All the time I look at my computer and have the yellow exclamation that there is no internet.  The only thing I can do is reboot pfsense and it mostly comes back up.  Sometimes it doesn't grab an IP on the WAN, so I power cycle the cable modem and it works again. Sometimes for a day, sometimes for 5 minutes, it is VERY frustrating.  There are 2 intel lan ports built in and I have a dual port intel PCIe add on card.  I just tried disabling the internal cards and just run the addon card.  Not sure if there is a conflict, it is just totally random and there isn't ever anything in the system log.  I spent $700 on this router and am at my wits end.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I don't know if it is a UEFI thing or ??  I upgraded to 2.3 to see if it fixes but it didn't.  It just did it again as I am writing this post.  I could ping the router, ping the WAN from my ISP but no internet, then just came back up without even a reboot.  Please help.

oh, i forgot, i tried a 2nd dual intel PCIe card, same result.

  • here is my system log..  it went down about 23:50 this time but it came back up without a reboot, just by itself.

  • I think you may want to add [ /code ] to the end of this post to shorten it up.
Been reading your posts and noticed you have been swapping nics quite often. For the sake of a base line you should pick the one you know worked and stay with it just incase your ISP is having to keep track of your mac address as some do as the registered device.
I would start with direct connect a computer with a firewall to that modem to test it first. May be a setting your missing  or other hardware.
Try another Network cable than what you are using now, and on and on. I can get frustrated to the point of walking away and then regroup then start one step at a time and check and test as you go.  ;)  don,t throw the baby out with the bath water as they say.
Like to help but having hard time keeping track. The Logs I noticed the date stamp was pretty messed up also. Not sure why.

  • Thanks for taking the time to respond.  I know it gets frustrating.  I don't know if any card has worked reliably as it keeps going down.  Now what I did was disable both onboard Intel Nics and am just using the dual Intel PCIe card.  No VPN, no separate wireless nic, just very simple.  It has been up for 5 hours but I was out with the kids.  I thought it might be the cable modem but when i swapped it out for my regular Asus, it works perfect.  I will not keep updating the nightly builds either.  I would gladly pay someone to figure this out or even buy the $200 quad port from the PFsense store if I knew that would fix the problem, just don't want to pay the $400 for PFsense support sub, that is too much for me..  Would just love to even get it down to a hardware or a software thing.  I have swapped all cables too..

  • " It has been up for 5 hours but I was out with the kids. "
So at present it is up with the ASUS as modem/router.

  • no, PFsense has been running for 5 hours but we haven't really been using it.  I also took the case off the PFsense computer in case the NIC was overheating..  Sometimes when it goes down i can ping the PFsense box and sometimes not.  Now everything has been working for a few hours but that has happened before and i thought it was fixed.  I bought kick ass components too so it is pi@@ing me off.  Now at least my son is happy, he is able to play Battlefront on the PS4.  It's really hard when you have such a internet hungry family, sheesh :)

  • whoever figures it out gets $100 :)

  • What version are you on. Also have you checked the DNS logs. Is unbound running. I have to restart it after any reboot. Do not go by the icon but actually check the logs.
lol keep the money your internet bill with your kids is going to hurt. ;)

  • From your IP address your on Shaw Cable… right?

Can you log into your cable modem and post its stats here?

Cable modem logs as well??  please!

Next time this happens ping 192.168.100.1 and see if you can reach it.

  • I am with Shaw cable, the modem is in bridged mode so I cannot log into it i don't think.  I just pinged that ip and it worked but I am up right now.

  • :) it would actually be better to pay someone so i can get back to enjoying some time with my family.  At this point, they think i am crazy.

I am on one of the 2.3 RC nightly builds.  it all started when i bought this new computer and 2.2.6 kept screwing up, that is why I went up to 2.3. I didn't check the DNS logs..  Just under diagnostics?  Here are a couple pics of my main screen and DNS screen.

What brand cable modem do you have?

  • Also in DNS Resolver also try just the WAN for Outbound interface not ALL, also it does not look like you hilighted the Network lans also. Does shaw have working IPv6 now,@chpalmer.
Would like you to go to Status/System Logs/ resolver and check the latest log time if it is not within a couple of minutes it may need restart.

  • Hey guys, just went down again.  Didn't get any yellow exclamation mark on the network icon.  Went over to cable modem and router and there was no status lights lit on the NIC that is my WAN and also the port on the cable modem that is connected to the WAN wasn't lit.  Had to power cycle the modem to get it back up.  Shit, i was hoping it was fixed.. Here are a couple of the screens I got.  Thanks  so much guys for trying to help me with this.  Cable modem is a Cisco DPC3825.

  • So- simple stuff

Have you tried wiggling your ethernet cable between the modem and the router?

    Tried replacing same cable?

What lights are on the front of the modem now and then when your connection is down?

    Modem stats would be wonderful…

  • Just changed the cable and the port that it was plugged into to rule out the port and cable..  When the internet is up, all lights are solid and since it is a modem/gateway, the port that goes to PFsense WAN port blinks with activity.  When it went down, everything was solid (including ONLINE light) EXCEPT the port that is connect to WAN of PFsense was out.

  • Well for what it is worth, I doubt SHAW is IPv6 for the last mile yet as rumor has it and they are behind Telus which I am on, so I would run IPv4 only including the WAN.  I do not use IPv6 at all, as in disabled completely with PFSense. Also the DNS Resolver settings need touch up. Your Outbound should be WAN instead of default all, then select your LAN,s for the other setting which in the photo,s show they are NOT selected. Finally the last snapshot is probably going to be the Release coming this Tuesday I have heard.
It may help to update to latest.
IPv6 is still long ways off before you will need to turn it on.

Did some checking and when the Cisco DPC3825 is in bridged mode only port one works.

  • you live anywhere near Coquitlam?  :)

I was wondering about IPv6, i will try to disable it.  I will also fix up the DNS resolver settings.  When the final 2.3 comes out I will upgrade to that.

Here is my plan of attack.

Since I switched cables and switched ports on the cable modem, i don't think it is a cable or the port.  I guess it has to be either the cable modem itself, pfsense, the Intel dual PCIe NIC or maybe a setting on the motherboard to do with PCIe or something.

I am going to get Shaw in to replace the cable modem, that will take that out of the equation.  If I keep having problems, i will pull the dual NIC and use the 2 built in Intel NICS, that should eliminate the NIC. I also have another computer I can try to completely remove the MiniITX build as a problem.

Man, what a nightmare.. Sounds like a couple more weeks of internet/family hell :)

  • just saw your reply.. now it is working but I will move it back to port 1 just to be safe.

  • @xman111:

just saw your reply.. now it is working but I will move it back to port 1 just to be safe.

Check the link to the SHAW also. You know it may not hurt to do a default setting redo and then go back into bridge mode. Hard reboot of modem may work if it was using wrong port any length of time. But see how #one works first I guess.  ;)
    Alberta.  :)

  • I was using port one before, i only switched to another port to try to rule out the port :)

  • is this what it should be like?  i got an error on the top one, it has to be all..  turned off at ipv6..

    https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B4IAV3fk9yIYUmZXVkZJa3ZwV2M

  • pick each LAN interface you are running that needs DNS  and also you should see Localhost . I did not pick my IPv6 interfaces. I have 3 picked myself for two network LANS and localhost(firewall itself)

  • got it, thanks, let the testing and ruling stuff out begin…

  • made the changes,  Internet went down again. .  trying different computer with everything else the same, if anyone cares :)

Here is a pic of my simplest form network..

  • Do you have a simple switch you could put between the modem and the router?

Are you not able to see any of the admin pages on the modem?  There could be an issue between the two devices that is causing this and the logs might show something…

  • I do have a nice Cisco switch that i could put between the modem and the router.  I cannot see any admin pages on the modem.  I could if it was in "gateway" mode and acting like a router but since it is in bridged mode, it is just acting like a cable modem, cannot get into it I believe, i have tried.

  • There should be a way to get into it…  Otherwise how would you change it back to gateway mode?

Do you remember the old address it responded to?

  • pretty sure the only way you can get back into it is to factory reset it with the reset button on the back.  It used to respond to 192.168.0.1, now that ip is unreachable.

  • http://192.168.0.1:8080  work?

    Im reading the manual now…

  • let me check when i get home, just at work now.  would be very helpful if it did.  was able to get the other computer up and running before I went to work today and I think the internet went down before I even left for work.  will have to double check when i get home.  thanks for your replies and trying to help guys, I REALLY appreciate it.

  • Cool-  Good luck!

Im watching a video of a guy accessing his in bridge mode and showing how he did it so I know its possible.  You dont have any LAN rules preventing the connection do you?

    Youtube Video

  • I had some port forward rules before to try to get my VOIP phone working but have since installed with just the default PFsense rules, haven't changed a thing for a bare install.

  • Ok– will wait to read your progress later.

    :)

  • thanks so much man, about 8 hours :)

  • I have a few questions:

    1. Why are you using the DNS Resolver settings, does your ISP not offer DNS? Just let it pull the DNS information via DHCP
    2. Can you reset your modem back to gateway mode? For testing purposes. It would seem to me you have a layer 1 issue since you are using link on your firewalls WAN
    3. Once your gateway is reset can you log into it and post the information under the ISPs network info? I'm looking for Receive signal levels, SNR, Transmit Signal levels …..

At Comcast we have a similar Bridge mode and the only way to take it out is to reset the gateway by holding down the reset button for 15 seconds.

You can run PfSense from behind a NAT just make sure you uncheck the box on the WAN setup that say, "Block private networks and loopback addresses"

When your PfSense Firewall goes down see if you can connect directly to the gateway and get out that way either wireless or wired. This will let us know if the problem is happening upstream of the PfSense Firewall. Also make sure you don't have any switching loops on your network.

How if the PfSense Firewall connected to your LAN, are you using a switch, if are you using any vlans? A simple network diagram here would really be helpful. https://www.gliffy.com/

  • Mostly I use DNS forwarder because i subscribe to AirVPN and they have a PFsense setup guide and DNS forwarder is how he sets it up, but I haven't even got that far yet.  The resolver is just the default setting for the PFsense install, I literally didn't touch anything after install.  Pretty sure my ISP offers DNS but I just default installed and waited for it to go down.

I could reset it back to gateway mode for sure to test, at this point I will do anything.  For number 3, yes I could do that as well.

when the firewall goes down, sometimes I can ping the firewall from my computer, sometimes I cannot.  Sometimes there is a yellow exclamation mark by the network connection, sometimes not.  All the time I can SSH into the console and mostly I cannot ping from there..

I posted a pic of my network above but here it is again…  It is a little more complex than this but for right now, this is how it is, just keeping it basic to get this thing working..

    https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B4IAV3fk9yIYT3VUQ3pzeFFEbWM

Really would like to narrow it down to a hardware or software problem, my wife thinks I'm an idiot but I have much invested into Pfsense and don't want to give up.

  • Sloooow down a bit… One step at a time.

Try the switch and lets see which interface is actually dropping when you lose connection.

  • @chpalmer  for sure, i want to be methodical in doing this.

how did you want me to wire up the switch to test? just cable modem wan to switch,  then one port of switch to wan of pfsense and another port directly to another Pc?
