What is the difference?

What is the difference between one of my machines behind pfsense running vpn via L2TP/IPSec and running it from within pfsense?

you either use your client machine to handle the encryption/decryption or you let your firewall handle it.

you either have 1 client machine going over the tunnel, or you can have multiple clients use the same tunnel connection simultaniously
