      Hi All,

Curious if anyone has had luck re-purposing old Firewall hardware to use with pfsense?  Currently I have the following 3 firewalls sitting with other IT junk:

      • Netgear FVS124G

      • Juniper SSG 5

      • Fortinet 60B

I'd like to install pfsense on one of these boxes and save the trouble of getting other hardware.  I have a PTP connection between two locations, both using pfsense and it works great.  One location, however, is running on an old Dell desktop that I'd like to replace.

      Thanks all!

pfSense is a x86 software based firewall, if this hardware will be also based on x86 hardware too it might be
running with luck, if not you should watch out for other hardware.

Thanks for the Post Frank…pretty sure my old firewalls don't run x86 so I'll go a different route.

You may get lucky with the Fortinet (maybe) Open it up and see whats inside. I can pretty much say no go with the Juniper SSG, may as well use it as a doorstop.

I know the fortinet uses some x86 parts but they also use a LOT of custom ASIC chips in the boxes as well for packet processing and stuff.  You can try but it may be very difficult.  I know the 60b only has 256MB of ram which will be quite limiting.  The post in the fortinet forums below may be of some help with the specs.
