Hi, is Diagnostics > Edit File safe to use to edit important files like /etc/fstab? From another post, someone called me nuts because I edited fstab using GUI. I am not saying I am not nuts but are any do and don't list of files where Diagnostics > Edit File is or is not appropriate?

EDIT: I chanced upon this thread https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/File_Corruption_(503_errors,_cannot_get_uid) and under Alternate Fix, Diagnostics > Edit File is used to edit fstab.

      pfSense 2.3-RELEASE (amd64)

        Well ….
It like repairing you car's engin with a can-opener  ;) It just might do the job.
The file /etc/fstab is rather critical : messing up with it and you'll be having difficulties starting your pfSense.

You're sure , this URL is a huge "page not found error" for me.
If you edit the /etc/fstab like you edit your URL's, I advise you NOT to touch that file :)

No "help me" PM's please. Use the forum, the community will thank you.
Edit : and where are the logs ??

…don't miss the closing parenthesis of the link, which is not recognized by the "auto link generator" of the forum software ;-)

              I didn't call you nuts.

It is a fact that changes made outside the gui are not saved in config.xml and are very likely to be clobbered by upgrades, updates, restores, etc.

You start messing around in your system like that and you are pretty much on your own.

When someone can't even figure out how to edit a file and wants to make such changes, unsatisfactory results can be expected.

Derelict, I didn't mind being called nuts as I have been called worse. I am trying hard to make pfsense work without having to learn commands from scratch. I have tried vi several times and reinstalled pfsense after each attempt. Let's say there is no chemistry between me and vi. That is why I am trying something else. If diagnostics > edit file is not appropriate, I will start vi again until I get it right.

Thing is there is no reason to use vi/edit file/emacs/ee/edlin/whatever except for the outside-standard things you are trying to do. Zero. Like I said. Run it on one drive. Else you're pretty much on your own. Nobody - absolutely nobody - (except you) will be tracking your customizations through updates and upgrades.

Wow that hit me like a brick. I get it now. I think I have a 500GB SATA as a slave drive in one of my machines I can rip out. I will use one drive. Many thanks for your help.
