An intel X710, that is. Apologies for the confusion.

In Europe, ISPs are obliged to allow their customers to use their own ‘modem’, but most of them drop support as soon as customers do. So I’ve put the cheap ISP ‘modem’ on the front line, and that is capped at the same speed. As soon as that’s running at the speed I paid for, I will connect my pfSense box straight to my own ONT, and post some speed results here.

I had/have one of those and it worked great. CompactFast storage is novel.

However it died with typical C2K CPU failure symptoms. 😢

Most of those will have a lot of hours on and might also fail so be aware. 😉

Yes, that's a 10 year old CPU. I would look at something newer if you;re buying a new device.

I'd guess, because I've not tested that personally, that it wouldn't pass 2.5G in pfSense. It might do 2G but there wouldn't be much overhead.

You could test something locally that you know is just using one CPU core. Yes the NICs will be using multiple queues if they can. At a power preference value of 50 I'm surprised it ever ramps down. I use 80 or 90 to achieve low power operation on devices here.

OK that bug has the info we need. But the bug itself is already fixed as evidenced by the fact your system recognises the HSUART devices.

You need to add that loader line to /boot/loader.conf.local otherwise it will be overwritten by the system. Create that file.
You might also need to add to that file the line: console=efi

Otherwise the standard console type applies and defaults the hw.uart.console value.

The Intel EEE disable mitigation and many other suggested fixes from various commentators have no effect. They may work in certain circumstances but there is no guarantee, even with 2.7+ and 23.05+.
Choose a non Intel i225 / i226 setup and save yourself some grief.

Indeed. I have an N5105 with i225V B3 and now an N100 with i226V (the N5105 is a backup in case anything goes wrong) and had zero problems with either.

ServeTheHome has also reviewed many of these off Aliexpress and seemingly never had any issues.

I also have the Intel chips (can't remember which) in two desktop PCs with no issues.

I doubt it will at this point. That's a >10 year old chipset. It looks like there was some interest at one point but nothing came of it:

The switch with VLANs would remove the need for a USB NIC. I wouldn't have any worries about the reliability of VLANs either and you would already be using a switch.

However something with two NICs is less config to get wrong. 😉
