PFsense recovering after WAN drop out
-
After a longish period of stability I have started to get drops in my internet service. They mainly occur as night so I suspect BT engineering works.
My Internet setup comprises a PFSense router 2.4.4 release and Draytech 2765 router in bridge mode.
The drop outs should be tolerable since they occur overnight and I would expect that following their completion that my internet service would resume. I think this on the basis that my PFSense router would reconnect. I assume the latter since it is this box that negotiate the PPPoE connection.
However as implied by the above, recovery does not occur. A restart of the pfSense router fails to reconnect. Power cycling the Draytek does fix the problem.
Has anyone a suggestion on how I might achieve reconnection after BT service outage?
I would be most grateful for such.
Thank you. -
@nalasirrom I would install a programmable timer that allows for disconnecting power to the Draytek device for a short time period. The following product from Amazon does the job for NA:
https://www.amazon.ca/Togoal-Multifunctional-Programmable-Interval-Circulation/dp/B07D7WCT75/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2X6PL9U9VX2HO&keywords=light%2Btimer%2BT319&qid=1675966267&sprefix=light%2Btimer%2Bt319%2Caps%2C111&sr=8-5&th=1
I expect there is a UK equivalent device.

Has anyone a suggestion on how I might achieve reconnection after BT service outage?Sounds like a modem problem. I see no such issues with PPPoE to BT here. And didn't way back when 2.4.4 was current.
Does the modem re-establish the DSL link correctly?PPPoE modems are very cheap these days. Just get an old Openreach modem or Draytek V130.
Also upgrade your pfSense install.Steve

Thanks replies, suggestion to upgrade to latest version was interesting. My pfsense says its on the latest level.
i have followed this up and seen some comment regarding packages but that doesn't apply to me. i will post separately on this topic after a bit more research. -
Check here for upgrade issues:

Hi thanks your suggestiond I tried running pkg-static info -x pfSense-upgrade and it said Major OS Version Upgrade - recommending running PGK Bootstrap -F
which I did and it reported the package management tool was not installed. Should I install it?? -
@nalasirrom If I were you, I would simply go to pfsense.org and download 2.6 version, be sure to make a config backup and restore.

@nollipfsense I was kinda coming to that idea.
Thanks....
