@dominikhoffmann Yes that works. Once on 23.01, you can install packages fine (or, the config restore will install them for you). The issue is on the 22.05 branch where they've turned it off to disable upgrades.

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

@dominikhoffmann Out of dumb luck, I opted to run the usbrestore I received from Netgate Support in order to migrate from UFS to ZFS on my 1100. Since this was a week before 23.01 was released, I ran the restore, was now on 22.05 ZFS, upgraded to 23.01RC, and upgraded to 23.01 release the day it was available. I guess I'm lucky I started from a really clean slate as I haven't had a single problem at all. Seems there was a pkg update for System_Patches since then which ran fine too.

@juanzelli @SteveITS So if you use a usb with the 23.01 version, you CAN upgrade/install the 23 version on the 2100 appliances?

          Where can I find this?

@nick-loenders I followed the instructions from a link similar to the one posted by @SteveITS for my 1100. Netgate Support provided the USB image file quickly after I opened the ticket with them. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to flash your device with the image they provide. It's a thorough process.

@juanzelli For completeness the 1100 link is https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/sg-1100/reinstall-pfsense.html. There is a page for each model, as they can differ. On the ARM models the command basically copies the image to the eMMC.

re: image, also use a large enough USB. To my eventual annoyance, I found Etcher apparently doesn't take into account the uncompressed file size, so writing a 1.6 GB compressed image to a 4 GB stick runs out of space and fails.

@steveits Correct. That is the URL for the instructions I used to successfully flash my 1100 with the image provided by Netgate Support. However, I did use Balena Etcher to flash my 4GB USB stick and encountered no errors.

@juanzelli Yeah the 22.05 fits on a 4GB. 23.01 tries but fails 80% ish of the way through burning it, as the fine print in Etcher says it needs 4.6 GB or something like that. So I ended up installing 22.05 and upgrading also.

@juanzelli @SteveITS I managed to reset the 2100 with the file from TAC and now 23.05 is working fine :)

I do have a question, I get the choice where to put the firmware on emmc of ahci ? I chose AHCI ??

and next the choice for UFS or ZFS ?? I chose the default one.

I hope this is all good?

@steveits Just to check back: when it is safe to install via usbrecovery on either the 1100 and the 2100, why is it, that the 23.01 image was pulled from the partner vault for the 2100 but the 1100 image is still there? Or was that just a mistake?

Edit: ah seeing that 2100 image is back, but the "old" images for 2xx0, 4860, 8860 etc. are still missing but are linked in their reinstall docs. Are they coming (back) soon?

Do you have a box with an additional/bigger sized SSD? Then I assume AHCI is what you want.

ZFS. No reason IMHO to use UFS anymore, especially with the added benefits of Boot Environments.

@nick-loenders Ah 32GB SSD - yes, then AHCI was the right one, otherwise you'd now have the 8GB eMMC active or would be wondering, why it wasn't installed at all and simply reboots the old version ๐Ÿ˜ Not that we had that case multiple times... ๐Ÿ˜‚

23.01 image was pulled from the partner vault

Didn't look today but as of a couple weeks ago multiple models didn't have 23.01 posted yet [edit: the 2100 is there now]. I suspect they just hadn't gotten to it yet. Installing to 1100/2100 from image works fine so it seems more useful to have them posted.

the small partition is causing the issue.
But they keep saying, on older systems... but the 2100 is not an old system? It is the replacement of the 3100....

What does it mean, I need to re-install ALL of my 3100 devices I have deployed?!
