I am talking about a stand alone network switch similar to the netgear gs108na or the ui switch 48 or switch 24. thanks.

@techpro2004 while you never know, seems like a bit of departure from the core business model of routing/firewalling.
It would prob be a tuff market to get into to be honest since there is so many options.. Like opening another burger joint right next to mcdonalds, burger king and five guys and smash burger already on the same block ;)
If there was some niche to get into, I would think more switching options in their actual appliances would be a more likely path if they wanted to get more into switching. But from the latest models, seems they are moving away from switches in the appliances anyway.
They really would need to provide a switch with lots of options with very low cost to have any hope to break into the market I would think.. Now if they could come out with a full featured L2/L3 multigig switch, say in the 24 port range with some poe and 1/2.5/5/10 ports along with some sfp+ ports, no fan, low power and easy to use cli and gui in say $200 price range I would be very willing to give it a shot. ;)
This is my dream unicorn switch - if you happen to know of such a switch, I would be very interested ;)

Yes it would be difficult to make an economic case for one.
I could imagine it making more sense when we have a central control system in place. But it would still be a big step.
There are some switches that can use OpenWRT as a control plane. -

I want say like a 8200 model for routing specs and ports. And then bolted onto that into the same chassis with say 40gig soc from the switch to the routing where the switch as my above wish list, for the price of about $600... I would be all over that ;) heheh

It would however be interesting if the switch in the current 2100/4100 appliances supported POE.
Then, one wouldn't need a separate POE switch.Maybe it's only be, but I imagine, most people don't really need that many POE ports (or many switch ports at all).

I don't know my sg300-28 is pretty full.. But I agree with you sure wouldn't need 28 poe ports..
I personally don't think a router should have any "switch" ports.. Its a router for gosh sake not a switch ;) But if your going to provide my unicorn switch with my router for a very good price - I wouldn't be too mad about that..

You see, I'm using a SG-3100 since it was launched.. I'm so used to the built in switch that I don't think I can live without it anymore..
You see, my desktop PC to the NAS is not using the 2.5Gbps uplink to the SOC..
The trunk (orange), is connected to devices that don't use a lot of bandwidth, TV 100Mbits port, raspberry pi 3b 100Mbits port, Chromecast 100Mbits port and Raspberry pi 4 is 1Gbps port..
But Chromecast 4b is only a syslog/netflow server..AP is connected directly to the SG-3100, thus not using the trunk (orange).
There isn't much traffic from the VLAN10 to VLAN100 and vice versa, only Plex (Direct Play 1080p) and SMB traffic for small files..
Edit: Just received an e-mail from Netgate with a $60 discount for SG-3100 owners to buy a SG-4100.. Man, the timing that I did this post and received this e-mail is insane.. hahahah

Now I don't know what to do.. I'll locate a reseller here in my country to confirm which one can apply this discount when importing it.. I guess I can learn to live without a built in switch ahhahaha, lets see...
Edit: Hmm, it seems that there isn't a guide to install M.2 drive in the SG-4100.. And this would avoid the warranty? :(
Edit2: Based on what I found so far, it seems easy to install a M.2 drive in it.. But I can't find any post where users successfully installed it..

@mcury the Max version comes with an m.2. Other models have a guide, the 4100 does not.

Re: switch, it would be almost impossible to beak into the commodity hardware market without huge volume. Also switches are generally hardware not software based. So there would need to be a unique selling point…
