DHCP Option 252, Option 42 Questions
-
Hello fellow Netgate community members,
Can you please help?
I am a bit confused with this. What WPAD URL would be required? We have made three per the Netgate docs. We have .dat .da and .pac.
To quote Netgate Docs, "A WPAD host may be supplied via DHCP numbered option 252 (string value containing the entire URL to the WPAD file) or DNS, which is easy to do with the built-in DNS forwarder."
Also per Netgate Docs we made three URLs to WPAD .dat .da .pac. . .
"Due to the different ways that various browser versions try to access the file, this same code should exist in at least three different places:/usr/local/www/wpad.dat
/usr/local/www/wpad.da
/usr/local/www/proxy.pac"My question now is, would I use three strings for option 252? It should only be one correct?
(Image: Current DHCP options configured)Also can you please let me know if option NTP 42 set correctly?
I feel I messed this all up but the Xbox is running fine.

I know it says A WPAD host may be supplied via DHCP option 252, but what WPAD file is supposed to be used here out of the three we created.

@JonathanLee If my memory server me correctly the three path are required if you don't advertise the URL using option 252. If you use 252 then the client should use it, and I suspect any modern client would look for the URL in 252.
I base the above on a vague memory of seeing random requests for "WPAD URLs" before I added option 252. Unfortunately I don't have that setup ny more so I can't verify it.

@pst Thanks for the reply, I am a bit confused with your reply. Just to confirm it does need all three so my configuration is ok?

@JonathanLee sorry if I wasn't clear. No, one URL should be enough
