the base 4GB eMMC on those original 2440s is a really tiny chip. You can't run ZFS on it, for example.

I'd get an SSD for it before the eMMC dies completely. https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/sg-2440/msata-installation.html

@rcoleman-netgate Would I still be able to get an image file from support even if my support is expired? From what I know about this model I cant use the download from the website?

@SteveITS OK, I didnt realize that. I was kinda curious about the output because it sorta looked like ut was only using 2.7 out of 4gb card but I dont know much about this.

Yes you can always get the reinstall image for Netgate hardware, you don't need current support for that. Just open a ticket:

                Hey Coldfirex!

                Speaking as a noob...

I'd go with a clean reinstall (request image from TAC guys)
and possibly with a UFS drive format. In my opinion, ZFS is
overkill for the small / older units.

The installer will ask you which drive format you would prefer.
UFS, is less processor and drive intensive but you are more
prone to drive errors in case of power outages apparently.

Also, you could consider a separate log file server, like GeyLog.
It'll take the pressure off the unit and you'll have greater visibility!

on a 4G eMMC (which it appears they have) you cannot use ZFS.

Also permanently ending UFS boot loops are worth going with ZFS.

I can confirm that adding extra storage device and getting a current install image from TAC on a 2440 is the way to go. I went through that process earlier this year, painless, got ZFS in the end and after quick testing mine is sitting in the closet as a cold spare.

                    My opinion only:
Netgate support ranks up in my top five as to "what customer support should be". Upfront cost of the devices seems high, but amortize that over the years of use and it's almost cheap.

@rcoleman-netgate I actually fill out the surveys when they get emailed to me. And I know me saying that doesn't get me any swag, so it's an honest opinion. I guess the caveat is I really haven't needed to use them beyond RMA for a 2440 that red lighted, getting images and the interactions I've seen on the forums.
If all that got me free shipping on my next device I'd be happy :)

That's probably good because that ended in 2021.

@rcoleman-netgate Yep. I got the red light RMA in just under the wire, updated install image within the last 6 months. So I'm going on the quality of the hardware (2440, 2100, 5100, 4100) and the overall support when needed.

I'm not trying to sound like a "fanboi" or whatever the young kids say nowdays, but give yourself a pat on the back.
