I keep trying to install net gate 4200.
Am I super technical no. On a Mac.
But I am following the instructions.
Instructions say to connect to computer. I am able to get to main screen. 192.168.1.1
Directions say, if Wan is 192.168.1.1 to disconnect Wan.
I go through steps. I then Change Lan to a new address. 192.168.101.1
When I hit reload, everytime it never goes to finish screen. Am I supposed to recconect Wan at any stage? Because I've done it with and without Wan, and both don't work?
Before the finish screen happens my Mac just goes to "site cannot be reached."
I've read a lot of these similar posts, why wouldn't netgate just include better directions for us noobs, or provide telephone support initially.
Anyways, if anyone can help that would be awesome.

Change your Mac IP address to 192.168.101.2 after that reload, and try again to access 192.168.101.1

dead on arrival, nowhere to be found.

@bigbob this is precisely why there needs to be better more specific.
-why is what you are saying something I need to look up?
-when I initially did this with 192.168.1.1 I was able to "reload fine." but then I couldn't access interface as my net gear router has same address. So everytime that I've changed the address "reload," has never worked.
-I just changed Mac address to 192.168.101.2 that did nothing.
                  -anyone?

                    https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/config/setup-wizard.html#lan-interface-configuration

"If the LAN IP Address ... settings are changed, the IP address of the computer used to complete the wizard must also be changed if it is connected through the LAN. Release/renew its DHCP lease, or perform a “Repair” or “Diagnose” on the network interface when finished with the setup wizard."

Unplugging and reconnecting the patch cable for your computer should pull a new IP also.

Overall the WAN subnet and LAN subnet cannot be the same, or pfSense won't be able to route packets.

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

                      @SteveITS so should I change to 172....?
When I am offline, it says net gate is connected.

@bigbob If your WAN is 192.168.1.1/24 then your LAN can be 192.168.101.1/24 since those are different subnets.

Your computer has to have an address in 192.168.101.0/24 in order to talk to 192.168.101.1.

Yes you can change either, they just have to be different subnets. Typically there is not much choice of what to use for WAN...either it's a public IP or whatever is already in use by the upstream network.

@SteveITS OK. How am I supposed to access the net gate interface if I'm successful? Still have to connect directly with ethernet cable?

@bigbob I'm losing what you're trying to do. In your OP you wrote you changed the LAN IP but later asked about changing the WAN IP.

pfSense (and any router) doesn't really function if WAN and LAN are the same subnet. So you need to make them different and go from there.

The point of disconnecting pfSense WAN temporarily is so you can actually browse to the LAN IP and make changes. Once you have a valid setup you can plug in WAN again.

In order to browse to the pfSense LAN IP you need some sort of network connection to that interface. It doesn't matter how it works. You can use a patch cable, yes.

What is your WAN network subnet?

                                      @SteveITS I'm guessing my Wan is 192.168.1.1
What I don't understand is why when I change my lan, and I hit reboot, it doesn't finish. But if I keep my lan at 192.168.1.1 it does?

@SteveITS but more than anything, and I'm very appreciative though, is why whatever you're going over with me is not in the instructions?

Did you change your computer's IP address to match the network you set in pfSense ?

After that reload, pfsense will be expecting a connection from the same network.

So, if you configured pfsense's LAN IP address to be 192.168.101.1 255.255.255.0, you should configure your computer's IP address in the same network, you can use 192.168.101.2 255.255.255.0

After that, just try to connect to pfsense's IP address again, but now, using 192.168.101.1 in your browser.
