Does anyone recommend a particular access point for use with pfSense and a usb port for local network access file storage? My AirPort Extreme is getting dated. But I want that simplicity of usb HDD use

@JonathanLee there are quite a few users here that use the unifi APs - I have 3 of them in my house. They work great.. A cheaper option is the ones from omada which sure seem like just clones of the unifi stuff - but they do have a few things in the controller that seem like improvements, etc.

Not aware of any true AP that would have ability to share a disk off usb like wifi routers do - that you might use as an AP. That really not a AP thing.. But more something you would find a home wifi router all in one sort of box..

If you just want some cheap way to share a usb disk, pick up a pi.. The new 4 models have gig interfaces and updated the usb speed, etc.. Haven't looked into any sort of benchmarks, but I can believe what your doing now is doing 100MBps file transfers is it?

is this also the device you are referring to as NAS and the reference to Time Machine and M1 weird photo issues over here ?

@jrey yep that is it. Everything works perfect except when I use the M1 apple.

@JonathanLee If I were to buy a new AP today, I would get the U6+ from Unifi..
It is not Wifi 6E, just Wifi 6, it is not that expensive now.

I have been using this tool: https://design.ui.com/, which is very nice to know where to deploy the AP.

dead on arrival, nowhere to be found.

Basically the network is likely flapping under load - I ditched my airport about three or so years ago so can not confirm with M anymore.

Think you are likely on the right path here to replace it.

Aruba InstantOn, they do a range of cloud managed access-points & switches.

@jrey man news spreads fast about that weird situation. I have it all locked as read only I do not want to get other offline stuff out it’s such time consuming thing to deal with. I fixed the files I needed and locked them down. I think it might have been left over from the failing drive also.

@NogBadTheBad wouldn't call it a curve ball - the 22 or the 25 would be what I would look at.. Seems a bit more price than the unifi or omada.. But its not crazy different..

@johnpoz But the Instant on is sooo much more simple and elegant in management for home users than the Unify AP’s.

Love the no fuss of using the official appliances :-)

I do like the Ubiquiti equipment very much and have installed for a few clients. I myself have access points from EnGenius. Their support recently improved, which makes them a viable option. I have four of them in my home.

Head on over to GrabCAD, if you are interested in a copy of an STL of the bracket I designed that can mount the EnGenius AP to a 2-gang electrical box.

Another UniFi user here. I have 3 U6-Enterprise APs, which are a tad pricier than other U6 models but have 6E support, and I've been pretty pleased with them for the 6 months or so I've had them.

I would not recommend trying the U7 yet --- price is sky-high and they seem to still be getting the bugs out.

@tgl I read something that they get pretty freaking hot as well, especially when updating or something... I don't pay a lot of attention to those since I don't have one and not in the market even.. But I do recall seeing some issues people are having with them.

And they make noise? That was the U7s doing that right?

Ubiquiti definitely design their equipment to run hotter than most other manufacturers do. I've not heard that they have reliability problems, so maybe they know what they're doing. But I'd recommend making sure there's good airflow around any of their gear. My U6s get uncomfortably warm to the touch (maybe about 130F?) on the rear mounting plate, but they seem happy anyway.

The U7's have a fan, not sure about its noise level offhand. Mine don't, and I've not heard that any other Ubiquiti APs do. There are noisy fans in many of their switches and routers, too.

@tgl here you go on the unifi forums post about the noise of the fan in the U7

                                    https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/1bfe7n9/u7pro_very_loud/

I have 3 unifi myself, but not any of the newer ones - they don't make a sound.. They haven't caught the house on fire yet ;) but not sure how warm they get they are in the ceiling (where APs belong) hehehe

If I was actually in the market to change mine out, I would prob pick up a few different ones and check them out - the EAP660 HD, the omada line seems like a great price for its feature set.. Does it perform up to its specs, not sure - but be worth checking out, if I was in the market.. Or if one mine died.. UAP-AC-Pro, lite and LR.
