I see that the download page at pfsense.org no longer offers downloads for the CE edition. It now links to the netgate store, where I can purchase for free a beta version of the pfsense+ installer. Is this the not so subtle end of the line for CE? Perhaps I have missed something as I only occasionally visit the forums these days.

      Thank you for any illumination.

also there is something going on with the package server.
I cannot install or update any package at the moment. tried on several machines.

seeing the same. no packages will install. Actually to be precise, all packages show tripled up, and upon trying to install,

WARNING: Current pkg repository has a new PHP major
version. pfSense should be upgraded before
            installing any new package.

But it is as updated for php as it can be.
            running 2.7.2.

Also tried to get a fresh 2.7.2 but it won't install because the installer has been changed to phone home for a few things, or repo, and it fails as on one element, which cannot recall now because I just need to move on.

and yea, the store thing is new. seeing the same. it's free so whatever, but the installer still fails.

@stephenw10 There are multiple posts on Reddit about the PHP/packages errors. Suspect it’s a repo problem.

Re download, the Netgate Installer is the new method. There have been a few posts about it, or/and https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/install/netinstaller.html.

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

But yes the life expectancy of the CE version is limited. Death by 1000 cuts or starvation

@SteveITS yea im not concerned about the store thing, it's free so meh. but currently it won't install and no packages will. so yea, repo issue seems likely. but im suspicious it's a 'good luck have a nice day' thing...

@Patch yea and of course it's free, so I get what I get, but im hoping the issue is just a repo problem and gets solved within a day, because this is problematic for a project im working on of course. not like there are issue run into when not actually doing anything, just my luck is stellar I guess. lol

@Patch thanks, grabbing that in case. my gut is it's the same "new" online installer. I'll report back if it's the offline. still won't get around the packages issue I assume, but we shall see

Just installed pfsense CE 2.7.2 on a mini PC today, to replace a failed SG-1100.
                          https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HVQQ498?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1
(boots and runs SO much faster than the SG-1100)

Also seeing the Package Manager not working, with 3 entries for each package.

@mrneutron was it the offline installer or the online? just curious if im about to waste some effort. ie, the one from the "store" or the one from a mirror that has not been flushed yet?

A friend shared the 2.7.2 .img file (pfSense-CE-memstick-2.7.2-RELEASE-amd64.img) that he downloaded back in December 2023, when it was released.
I wrote that .img file to a USB flash drive using Rufus and loaded up the mini PC from scratch.

@f89y24h4 I can at least confirm it's the offline installer, so that's a nice find to put in our internal repo.

@Dobby_ correct, but it's a new fangled online installer, which fails to install because the repo is borked. The old offline version installs fine, but the repo is still borked so you can't install packages.

Thank you for the replies. They include the link to the images we used to see, which is very helpful, and hopefully this will not go away any time soon. I also see the multiple (three) packages of the same kind. I rebooted but problem stays. I will catch up on the other responses and linked posts tomorrow. Cheers.
