      I am hoping that someone can help me track down some of the errors that I am seeing with my router in the last week since I upgraded to 2.8.0. Unfortunately the same day I upgraded my router to 2.8.0 I also upgraded my service from Centurylink to Quantum Fiber (same company but different products and handled differently). I for the last three days have been hounding them as I figured it was an issue with the new service. They claim it is my router,, though I have had pfsense running for 5 years here with my ppoe service and have not had any issues like I am having now. Though after looking at the logs it does appear pfSense may be the culprit. Here is what is happening:

      • I'm getting random dropouts in which the service just drops for 10-20 seconds but comes back up
      • I am sometimes having issues in which the GUI for pfSense gives me a 50x error and I have to SSH into the router and restart php
      • I am having issues like I just had for about 30 minutes today in which I get the 50x error, but when restarting the php, I get access to the GUI but the router will not acknowledge the IP or give me access to the WAN (no internet). Restarting the gui sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't.
      • I have to "reroot" or reboot the router to get it back up, and sometimes even that doesn't work

      Here is the logs from when this happened today:

      During this time, I did the following to try to fix the issue:

      • SSH'd into the router and restarted php (4 or five times)
      • Tried logging into the Netgear Q1000k ONT (was able to get in once, but then no access)
      • Reset the Q1000k ONT plugged directly into it with my laptop and network was working, plugged back into network
      • Went back to the pfSense and remove the RJ45 SFP checked connection, reinserted and reseated the Ethernet cable
      • Logged back into the router, still not working, CPU (i5-7500) is running at 25-30% (weird)
      • Did a reboot "reroot" of the router - then everything came back up and connected

      Any help anyone can provide or anything I need to do to try to resolve this I would appreciate it.

        I had to delete a bunch of log to get the post to submit, so if you want to see the log from 15:30 (around when the connections starts dropping) until 16:10 (when it finally comes back up) I can provide it.

        By the way this is happening at least once per day over the last week.

          OK it looks like ixl0 is losing link to the ONT/modem.

          How is that connected? At what speed?

          A good test would be to put a switch in between if you can. That would rule out som low level link negotiation issue between the two devices.

            I was having a related issue. Once I set the WAN to NOT use IPv6, that stopped part of the problems. But I'm using Metronet here in the Indianapolis area.

            Specifically, if I had set up, during install, to have the WAN not handle IPV6 and only use IPv4, then when the ISP's router responded with both IPv4 and IPv6, I started getting hundreds of error messages. I can't log into the EERO router (another set of problems), so I had to put in a switch, run the ONT into it, and then connect the EERO router to the switch and then Pfsense into the switch and that stopped the IPV6 problems. The ONT to my knowlege has never been supplying an IPv6 address.

            I hope this helps you because I fought this for a week.

              @stephenw10
              ONT is outside, there is CAT6 from the box outside directly into my rack in the house. I have a SFP+ to RJ45 in my pfSense box that is connected to an Intel 550 10G card. It should be 10G, connection, looks like the setting I have is "default" right now. Should I change this to 10G or auto-select?

              I don't have another 10G switch at my disposal, but is there something inherent in 2.8.0 that deals with this differently, as this hasn't been an issue for year with the old set up.

              @Wylbur
              Thanks for the advice. I do have IPv6 disabled throughout my entire network and it hasn't been changed since the upgrade.

                You can certainly try setting it to 10G fixed. That if often required for 10G links. If you are seeing a negotiation issue that could prevent it.

                  I changed this in the Interfaces. If this turns out to be the issue.......I'll be very unhappy person.
                  I do appreciate your help.

                    This was it. Since setting this field no longer getting issues with the interface going down or the pfsense dropping.
                    Thanks for the direction.
