Can you supply the startup output when the system fails to recognise your NIC?

        its onboard:
        biostar GF7100P-M7S
        http://www.biostar-usa.com/app/en-us/mb/content.php?S_ID=312

        1.2.3 release

when it doesnt recognize it, it does the standard interface mismatch and presents one with a list of available interfaces to choose from (same prompt that you get when booting up for the first time)

            you mean like dmesg?
I just reboot it(when it fails to recognize it) and then it recognizes it and boots up fine.

              Yes.

I presume you reported this because you would like the behaviour to change. Its possible the dmesg (startup) output will contain some clue as to why the NIC is not recognised and that clue might lead to a fix. At the moment there is very little information to work with.

Thanks for the dmesg output. I thought that there might have been an error found during the re device attach processing on startup but that is not the case here.  Rather it looks as if the device is sometimes not seen during startup. It appears the re is a PCI Express device in which case the PCI Express serial link between the device and its upstream bridge needs to be initialised before the device is visible to the CPU.

I suggest you look on the Biostar support web pages to see if there any sort of fix for this problem (e.g. maybe the BIOS needs to wait a little longer to allow the PCI Express link to come up) or if its a known but won't be fixed problem (e.g. bug in the NIC silicon). It might also be worth looking through Google to see if ohters have seen a similar problem.

your welcome, thanks for the help.

according to biostar it is a PCIE device. when i find out i will update.

also is there a way to force a reboot if it doesnt detect the nic?

One doesn't - the driver is built into the kernel.

well I had to redo the system for an unrelated problem (just restored to default) and it went away.

Problems like that which spontaneously go away leave me suspicious that they will spontaneously come back.

by it going away i mean the it doesnt appear on every other reboot like it did, when it goes away it is replaced with error messages that say that nothing was properly dismount and then it cleans the file system then continues to boot, dont know why though.
I dont reboot that often so I am not sure if it is an issues

update: I think it had to do with the fact that I was cloning a MAC address before and am no longer do so at the present moment. I no longer have any file system error messages either, so i think that the realtek just had problems accepting a different MAC.
