Assuming Soren does his usual quality of work on the net6501, it will be the low-power, medium-traffic pfSense machine. The Lanners are nice, but rather expensive and I haven't found much in the way of rack-mountable Atom machines with multiple NICs (yes, I know about the Supermicro and the couple of desktop machines. I need rack-mount and a cd-rom bay).

That sounds great but I would wait for PC-Engines to come out with something similar.
Soekris has showed the pfSense project 0 attention and has done nothing to help the project.
PC-Engines has done an amazing amount for the project and I would rather see them awarded with business over Soekris.

Do you know of some inside information from PC-engines that the general public does not know? I would have bought the soekris in a heartbeat but if there is something comparable from pc-engines, i would definitely put all my support behind them. Besides, they are cheaper anyways! :)

I got an e-mail reply from pc-engines and it looks like they don't like the chipset for the ATOM processors so don't hold your breath for one!

I've talked to one of the PC-engines guys recently (pascal), they don't have any plans to go with the Via Nano either (chipset uses too much power). They also aren't planning to go to 512mb ram on the Alix2 boards either.
I hope they do go with the Atom though, that would be a substantial upgrade over the current Geode setup they use.

I really hope so too. There isn't much to like about the chipsets for atom and the power it draws but then again, there isn't much else out there…

So, everybody heard the good news from Soren Kristensen? Prototypes should be ready in March: http://lists.soekris.com/pipermail/soekris-tech/2011-January/017014.html Although it will still take some time till they will be available I am really looking forward to this box!

Already slipped from March to "Late May"… still not holding my breath.
And at that price I'd be looking at boxes from Lanner or building my own 1U atom with more RAM.

Lanner makes some great stuff and I'd absolutely buy from them if they made something comparable to the 6501, even at a higher price. I was thinking of picking up their FW-7539 for home but I'm pretty sure the 82583V NICs won't work in pfSense, and I found out it's not fanless, even in single-core design, so until the situation changes, Soekris has a unique product and will probably get my business on a couple units if they ever ship.

The main advantage is the 4 gigabit NICs. Most boxes I have seen elsewhere have been more expensive or just have 1 NIC. You will need more then that for a router. I have a Lanner Box that has 2 NICs but it runs pretty hot and cost more. Not sure we would need more then a 1Ghz CPU and 1 GB of RAM for a Pfsense box. I like the thought of it being minimal with no Graphics

Agreed. I would rather have this over a standard desktop Atom board…..for pfSense.
Can anyone in pfSense-land talk to PC Engines and see if they are coming out with an equivalent?
