My cheap 1u setup (UK), completely silent and only £80-£100
-
well it has pci support, so you can put a pci wireless card in it :)
-
I am thinking about using this exact setup with the addition of a dlink wireless pci-e card and this switch
http://www.blackbox.co.uk/gb-uk/fi/1501/12484/4-Port-USB-Powered-Gigabit-Switch/V3.S1.O3/switch+ethernet
The main purpose is for firewall of course and vpn. My download speed is 63mbs and upload is 19 mbs. Will this handle this. I am a total noob to pfsense.
Thanks in advance

USB powered switch is quite interesting and I see they have several variants. 2.5W offers quite a saving over my current switches. Possibility of mounting inside another enclosure etc.
The Atom D525 used in the above setup is good for >500Mbps of NAT/firewall traffic so should handle your WAN connection easily.Steve

I forgot about these, although I had only seen 10/100 versions before. But now we just need one like that with VLAN support. (Hey, a guy can dream.)
I also remember (PCI/ISA) card slot mounted hub/switches, too. Simply pulled power from a Molex plug. But, I can't seem to find 'em now. Also seen drive bay mounted hub/switches, if your box has an exposed drive bay, could be cool, but, of course, can't find any now. I had some 1U boxes way back that had both a 5.25" CD-ROM bay and a 3.5" floppy bay exposed on the front, but then you've got cables out both the front and back. I presume you could get a GS105E-100NAS to fit in a drive bay, though, and it's 12v so you could run it off the 12v rail off the PC power supply.
Anyway, BlackBox is funny in a way that I can really get behind. I like how they take discontinued products and re-label or re-package them as their own. Gigabyte had a 10/100 version about 10 years ago and BlackBox used to (might still) sell a 99% exact copy of it, it really looked simply re-branded. I noticed them do similar with a US Robotics switch I had long ago and noticed it pop up on BlackBox re-badged as their own brand (The USR Total Switch, a modular switch chassis with VLAN support, about 15 years ago.)
They have cool and wacky stuff, though, which is handy (though not usually cheap.)

Just for the record will the following wireless card fit onto that motherboard
http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DWA-556-Wireless-Desktop-Adaptor/dp/B000V6C718
and does anybody know if it will work as an access point.
Just one last question do you know the power consumption of the machine I know in one of the links it gives numbers but I was just wondering if you had done any tests because in another post someone mentioned his setup using the same mb was only using 16 watts.
Thanks In advance

No, that card will not work with that motherboard. It has a PCI slot, that card is PCI-Express. (It's also hard to tell if that supplier supplies a PCI Riser Card, even.)
-
I need to find a good deal on a motherboard/case/psu like that here in the USA. Good find.
-
The board we are discussing (X7SPA-HF-D525) has a PCIe slot so would work with that card.
The chassis references a pci card but only in terms of component space. The DWA-556 is listed as supported here:

I love what you have done! Please could attach pictures of product showing us inside and outside? Looks amazing!
-
It's not totally clear, but does the barebones box include the processor?
-
will update once i get it through the post :)
-
…or I could update, as I got one through the post.
IT DOESN'T INCLUDE THE MOTHERBOARD!
(hence it's going back, as an HP Microserver +NIC is cheaper)
-
Ooops!
That explains why the website is a bit light on detail. ::)Steve

It did look a bit suspicious when the motherboard alone retails for just under £200.

yup even know the company advised me it comes with a motherboard, it didnt. Thanks for that lambda-tek.
Anyway I have ordered http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Intel-D2500CC-D2500CCE-Mini-ITX-Dual-Core-ATOM-CPU-2x-Intel-LAN-Car-PC-Carputer-/200725215717?pt=US_Motherboard_CPU_Combos&hash=item2ebc27b9e5 at a cost of £88.64.
Good price for a good spec Atom motherboard. Since lambda will not take it back because i have opened the parcel tape, which apparently now means its opened. I will just use this case with above motherboard.

Ouch! Sounds like a company that will never be seeing my money. ;)

What ever happened to distance selling regulations, and goods being sold not as described???
Looks like I'll be avoiding them in future too. -
Nice Build, I have the same chassis, but use an older board (got it from work free - We make loadbalancers out of them) with an old Atom 330 CPU nice at 8w TDP just need to change the PSU for a low power one. adding a dlink 556 to it shortly too for wifi.
I also use a IDE 4Gig DOM for the drive http://buymemory.com/transcend-4gb-dom-vertical-40pin-V-TS4GPTM510-40V-TS4GDOM40V-S.html (again from work)

Looks like I'll be avoiding them in future too.Yeah with distance selling regulations they should not only take it and give you your money back - your free to do this even if you just decide you don't want it within 14 days.
But if its not as described they should also refund the shipping to you and also the return shipping!
