My devices are all in the same LAN subnet, even on the same switch. I played a little with an ALIX Board, no VLANs, just plain vr interfaces. LAN static, WAN DHCP. No captive portal, just the freeradius2 package installed, OpenVPN and IPsec VPN enabled.
Strangely logging works when I use my local IPv6 net. As that does not rely on ARP, I had a look at my switch configuration (Cisco SG300), but playing with ARP and MAC age settings did not help. Then I tried the hardware settings on the ALIX, but after enabling Device Polling it became unreachable after reboot. I have power cycle it tonight, I was doing the tests remote.
Is it normal for dmesg printing those after reboot? I always get those…

Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/ufs/pfsense1
vr1: link state changed to DOWN
vr1: link state changed to UP
vr0: link state changed to DOWN
      pflog0: promiscuous mode enabled
vr0: link state changed to UP

        @jimp:

Where is 192.168.120.62? On your LAN? Across a VPN? Somewhere else? If it's local, what type of interface is it on? Captive portal enabled there?

I've got a router on 2.1 just installed on Friday that does remote syslog across OpenVPN and it works fine after a reboot, no problems there at all.

Jimp: My system is working OK and the 192.168.120.62 is on the local LAN subnet and normal NIC interface. And not using captive portal.
It is "athurdent" who has problems.  Just briefing him that it is not generic problem with 2.1 but seems to be a local problem.

The reason to why I included my config was just to show him how my working one looks like.  :)

There is a fix that restarts syslog at the end of the booting process when an IPv6 address is being used. The reason for that fix was very similar to the problem you are experiencing, where syslog would not send logs over IPv6 at bootup. Here is that note http://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/2370#note-12.

Thanks, I think I'll stick with IPv6 for now. I know it used to work after a reboot, I am using and updating my pfSense 2.1 KVM for approx. a year now. If I changed something relevant to that in my network, I cannot find it. As it works everywhere else, I'll keep on looking and report back when I find the cause. Thanks for the help so far!

I have the same problem with my test server (built on Mon Feb 4 03:44:55 EST 2013), no entries in remote syslog.

              	 <syslog><reverse><nentries>50</nentries>
              		 <logall><nologdefaultblock><remoteserver>192.168.10.10</remoteserver>
              		 <remoteserver2><remoteserver3><enable></enable></remoteserver3></remoteserver2></nologdefaultblock></logall></reverse></syslog>

Remote syslog server is in same LAN.

My "production" pfSense machine (built on Mon Jan 28 07:27:34 EST 2013 [not updated, before new Status Queues page works]) does send  events to remote syslog.

              	 <syslog><nentries>100</nentries>
              		 <reverse><remoteserver>192.168.10.10</remoteserver>
              		 <remoteserver2><remoteserver3><enable><nologdefaultblock><dhcp><portalauth><vpn><apinger><relayd><hostapd></hostapd></relayd></apinger></vpn></portalauth></dhcp></nologdefaultblock></enable></remoteserver3></remoteserver2></reverse></syslog>

Interesting, what is the first entry in /var/log/system.log?

Hmm, then you might be facing a different problem or my first entry is unrelated to remote syslogging. I always get:

                    syslogd: sendto: Network is unreachable

Yes, it's something diffrent, because now my test server is sending events to remote syslog.

Last events from this server before today were at 2013-01-25 10:55:43, so after that time I might have abused my test server too much…

                        Hi,

I have the same problem with 2.1 (02 feb build).
My syslog server is directly attached to a static NIC of the pfsense box, not using IPv6 but it's not globally disabled. WAN link is pppoe though, if that matter.

After a fresh reboot of the pfsense box:

                        • nothing on syslog server.

                        • if I do some modification on the pfsense syslog parameters page and click on save, I get in remote syslog:

                        Feb  8 17:04:02 192.168.10.254 syslogd: restart
Feb  8 17:04:02 192.168.10.254 syslogd: kernel boot file is /boot/kernel/kernel
                        Feb  8 17:04:02 192.168.10.254 kernel: pflog0: promiscuous mode disabled
                        Feb  8 17:04:02 192.168.10.254 pf:

                        • if I go into a shell on pfsense box, stop syslogd process and restart it, issue is fixed.

                        Additionnal data:

                        • Seeing the "syslogd: sendto: Network is unreachable" message in pfsense logs.

                        • no package installed

                        • Config:

                                <syslog><nentries>50</nentries>
                                        <logall><remoteserver>192.168.10.1</remoteserver>
                                        <remoteserver2><remoteserver3><enable><reverse><nologdefaultblock></nologdefaultblock></reverse></enable></remoteserver3></remoteserver2></logall></syslog>

Try editing this file on your firewall and remove the if statement and closing bracket, so it just runs system_syslogd_start(); no matter what.
                          See if that helps.

So that change fixes the problem?

Or you're OK with testing the change?

OK, I took the if statement out and updated the comment. Should be in later snapshots.

I've got the same problem with 2.0.3, presumably I could try the same fix?  Thanks, Adrian

Yes if the same test/code is there on 2.0.x then the same fix should work.
