[ Show your pfSenses! ] - Thread - (bandwidth warning!)

@cmb:
Good idea for a thread. We're going to gather pictures from a variety of threads like these in the future and create some kind of micro-site showing off people's deployments. In the mean time, might as well get another thread going. :)
Here's our primary colocation facility, where this site and most of our others run, as well as the snapshot and release build servers. The firewalls are virtual in ESX, a HA pair with primary on one ESX server and secondary on another.
It should probably be noted that this has changed substantially since Dec '12. The R510s are still in-use, but we use real hw firewalls now, not VMware, and there is a redundant 10Gbps link running to the office, where the build servers now live.
Will try to post pics soon.

In the meantime, we gave the freebsd foundation two custom-etched APUs to raffle off at BSDcan.
Here's a flickr album from one of the winners.

The test rack at ESF/Netgate.
This is where pfSense gets hammered.
-
Primary and Testbox just put in small quarter rack. Wire management to come. :)

current snapshot (tends to change every now and then ;))

Nicely routed cabling. ;)
A sharp contrast to many others (including me!) ::)Steve
-
Tnx! ;D
It's nice because I had time & means to properly select cable lengths.
But there's no such thing as an ideal world… (see next picture :D)--edit: edited screenshot again--

Ah, that looks lore like what I'm used to. ;D
All running pfSense? Can't make out the LCD on the XTM5s to be sure.Steve
-
No, the xtm's are still WG licensed. Only the xcores as they were leftovers from a trade-in/upgrade program. Maybe one day… ;)
-
It turns out that pfSense box can make a decent Metal Gear model stand. And let's face it - no one f**ks with your network when there's Rex around ;)

Here's the last couple of installs…

Thought I would post an updated pic of my setup.
The hardware is still the same as stated in this post.
https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=57028.msg304531#msg304531Earlier this year I transitioned it to this rack since having an 18 month old son had me rethink my setup. For some crazy reason he thought certain buttons were there for him to push. ;) I got the rack for $180 including shipping/delivery… Couldn't pass it up. Totally worth it.

My home rig.
2x2U IBM X3650 with Vsphere 5.5 Enterprise Plus running HA, HP Procurve 2810-24G and a Linksys WRT1900AC to handle the wireless clients.
And a slightly modified Lack rack from IKEA :D

Nice. How's the WRT1900AC working out for you? Too expensive for me, especially when the open source friendliness claims turns out to be a bit stretched.

Just installed the first of a handful of FW-7551's. The performance looks great but I sure do miss the form factor of the 7541.

My last FW-7541…Gunna miss that box. Still trying to figure out who the heck mounted the rack 9 feet up on the wall though! :o

I hate that, it always seems like a good idea at the time, until something goes wrong.
-
Its great! Damn fast and and very long range.
And yes OS is a bit stretched but would be great if pfsense could run on it.
http://wrt1900ac.com/specs/ It seems that the long awaited wireless driver is out and people can install the WRT images on it.
It has 256 MB DDR3 so well specced within pfsense "range".

I keep going back and forth if i want to buy the wrt1900ac (after dd-wrt is fully supported of course) or buy the UniFi AP‑AC… But this wont happen until next year sometime or a xmas to myself...
-
Personally I'd want to see OpenWRT running before anything else, assuming there's no pfSense support of course! ;)
Steve
-
I dont like that the hardware specs are not listed on the site and not listed in the downloadable material on the Unifi AP.

I hear ya, this may help:

Not good performance on the 5G band..
2.4 GHz performance for the UAP-AC was comparable with AC1750 routers we have tested. But 5 GHz performance suffered from both lower peak throughput and shorter range as well.
Compared to other access points and AC1750 routers, at $300, the UAP-AC is expensive. The runs contrary to Ubiquiti's general hardware pricing, which tends to be very competitive. But as one of the few draft 11ac APs available, perhaps Ubiquiti is just trying to get while the gettin' is good.

WRT1900AC
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2143623/linksys-wrt1900ac-wi-fi-router-review-faster-than-anything-we-ve-tested.html
This test was the reason is chose it over the ASUS…
And it does a very good job here at home.
-
Pretty much every review I've read about the WRT1900AC has been pretty good. I'm looking more towards features/reliably then WiFi performance.. When OpenWRT/DD-WRT firmware comes out, I may hit you up to see how VLANs work on the box..
-
It can VLAN out of the box… I just dont like the Linksys software since its pretty non informative.
Reliability is excellent and with DD-WRT firmware, it will be something that will last a long time since it can push a lot of traffic...
-
Good to know, thanks for the info

Came in today, going out tomorrow! Love the new boxes ;D

Steve, can you make this a sticky so it can be found even without new posts?

Seems like I can. :)

For those with official pfSense hardware, please post a few pics here as well https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=126630.0
