No problems for a year or more in pfsense with this server running pfsense till 2.2 beta just installed yesterday.. Now em1 is gone and em0 shows up but is not showing connection.  My server has the pdsbm-ln2 mother board in it.  It has the Intel 82573 nic built in.. 2 ports.  This is supported with freebsd 10 from what I read.

Any one else use this nic or this motherboard and have 2.2 working?  I am usually pretty good at getting things going. but this not figured out yet. maybe needs to be forced on or something.

    Dell 2950 g3 server
    Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5430 @ 2.66GHz
Current: 2000 MHz, Max: 2667 MHz
    8 CPUs: 2 package(s) x 4 core(s)
    8152 MiB and 600meg 10k drive
Pfsense 2.4 .. Hoping to get the phpvirtualbox going again.

That really sounds like a hardware problem. Try the version you were on before.

It was working just fine one 2.1 but the update to beta 2.2 is when it failed.  Later tonight after work I will try putting back the older version and my guess it will work just fine.  I have since factory reset the system just to take that question out of the mix.  I know it is not as good as clean reinstinstall.

I am now using 1 net port and that is Wan so I get in that way and updated to 2.2 december 3rds build.. still nothing. Will let you know what I find. I will figure it out

I just managed to get a 2.2 beta on December 4th to burn to cd and installed that fresh.. It Shows only EM0.  But I have tried 2 other linux distro's that both show em0 and em1.    I don't have another blank cd to burn 2.1 yet.  So that test can not be done at this current moment.

Ok .. I got a 2.1 iso on cd and tried it.  I got em0 em1 and usbus00,10,20,30,40 all up status.  But the 2.2 Beta as of dec 4th cd just shows em0

So ubuntu and 2.1 see the ports fine but 2.2 does not. I am running off CD so no chance of any of my changes or things can conflict with this.. This is a clean test of 2.1 aug 24th release and 2.2 dec4th Beta ..

My server has the pdsbm-ln2 mother board in it.  It has the Intel 82573 nic built in.. 2 ports.

            Summary

            2.1 release
            em0 and em1 work

            2.2 beta dec 4th
            em0 ok
            em1 gone

All tests using Live CD images only

also in hopes of trying to get some use of 2.2 I have a Intel 82546 dual nic card.. This works fine in 2.1.5 64bit but locks the 2.2 beta in the booting.

screen 1st capture is of 2.1.5 64 bit running on a CDRom.

screen 2nd capture is of 2.2 64 dec 4th running on CDRom failing at this point staying locked

                Try disabling msi/msi-x:

I don't think MSI will fix it; the resources can't even be allocated.

Seems to have started in freebsd 9.2: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/mailing.freebsd.current/AePu1kitjLY  Not sure if that patch ever made it into 9.3 or 10.1, or if that was even the proper fix.

Could be two different issues here. One NIC type fails to attach, the other crashes the boot.
Could we see a complete boot log, /var/log/dmedg.boot, from 2.2 with only the 2 on-board NICs?

                        Try disabling msi/msi-x:
                        https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Tuning_and_Troubleshooting_Network_Cards#MSI.2FMSIX

Tried this and nothing changed at all.. still only 1 built on lan port works.  This is not too much of problem right at moment cause I am using not fast internet so my USB - LAN 100 works ok for the slow speed.  But I plan to get much faster and I need the 1gig built on to work

Did you have that enabled during the above boot? I still see:

Not sure if that patch ever made it into 9.3 or 10.1

                              Looks like it's in 10.1:

Hard to believe you're the first person to run into this. More Googling required.
Since this appears to be a resource allocation problem it could be a bios bug. You could try disabling acpi or/and disabling any devices you're not using, sound card, parallel port etc.

Still not giving up, if one works and the driver is in Freebsd then there is some way to get the second port of the Intel 82546 dual nic built on the motherboard.  Below is the command pciconf.  I believe I see the device listed there that is missing

I have updated the bios from 2007 version to a 2009 latest one they had.  I even played with jumpers to disable the working one and then the other worked.. So both will work but only 1 at a time.

Yep that's it but it doesn't help much. Actually reading back through the boot log most of the errors are not directly about the NICs but the buses/bridges the are attached to.
The thing with the most errors is pcib1 ,PCI bridge 1. That appears to be connecting PCI bus 0 to PCI bus 2. These are not necessarily PCI buses as you might think of them, they could be PCIe or AGP or some thing else.
PCI bridge 2 connects PCI bus 0 to PCI bus 6. The first NIC that fails to attach to a driver is on PCI bus 6.
PCI bridge 3 connects PCI bus 0 to PCI bus 7. The NIC that works is on bus 7.
Both these PCI bridges are showing the same allocation errors yet one is functioning just fine.

Those errors, though not good, may be not relevent. Do you see anything like that under 2.1.5?

You could try booting in verbose mode to see if any further errors are given.
I was sure there was on option to do this in 2.2  but I can't find it now  ??? so just add boot_verbose="1" to loader.conf.local.

                                        Steve
