      What hardware would you recommend?

I already have a system with a G1610 CPU. Would it be sufficient if I just upgrade the CPU and the case, and add a NIC, for the use below?

It'll run programs like snort/suricata, maybe squid and dansguardian/squidguard, openvpn, pfblocker. It must at least have enough "headroom" for these and more packages. The packages should be on par with the bandwidth, seeing as users will be forced through it.
It's important that pfsense won't be the bottleneck, even with the packages. The bandwidth should at least be 500 Mbps up and down.

        Hello,

an Intel Celeron G3260T @3,2GHz would be sufficient to route 1 GBit/s WAN connection and
run Snort might be also no Problem, but if it is able to realize all of your packets and 500 MBit/s
I really don´t know! If you must be really sure on this you might be have a look to this machine
able to realize this for you well together with 4 GB - 8 GB RAM.

Jetway Intel 4 GB LAN Ports ready to go
Jetway Intel 5 GB LAN Ports ready to go
If you are in the US this would be a real goal for you, if not you could try up to insert in your existing platform
a mSATA or SSD, 8 GB of RAM and a Intel Dual or Quad Port server grade NICs and a G3260T @3,2GHz.

What about Intel Core i5 3470T instead of Intel Celeron G3260T? NIC: Intel I350-T4, is it bad?

Should I rather buy an already made build? What about 2440, 4860, or 8860?

            • 150 € instead of 65 €
            • no ECC support
            • But with AES-NI
Would be going also very liquid as I see it right.

No it is a good and new one.

The 4860 and 8860 would be really rocking for sure, and you are able to add a modem, mSATA
and/or WiFi card inside, pfSense comes pre installed and is ready tuned as a "ready to go" solution.

What do you mean with "very liquid"?

Okay, so either 4860 or 8860 is more than up for the task @ first post?

By very liquid, I think he means "smooth, running without a hitch".

He is German, so I suspect it is a saying that doesn't translate well.

Without being drippy, lame, from time to time coming up with problems, viscously, gluey or what
ever you are using for being slow without being right sorted out.

Okay, so either 4860 or 8860 is more than up for the task @ first post?

This depends on the installed packets, offered services and the entire set up or configuration
you are running, and reading between the lines, I suggest for you with the services and packets
and on top the entire needed or wished throughput named in your first post that the SG4860 or
SG8860 would be the best choice here or something similar like this.

You are absolutely right with this!

You can not compare directly cpu cores against! because a Xeon E3 CPU core is not the same
as an Intel i3 or i5 Core and surely not the same as an Atom CPU core!

                    Thanks for the replies.

New question: What if I continue using G1610, and only use openvpn? What would the max bandwidth be?

I really don´t know it! But the Celeron G3260T is able to push 1 GBit/s at the WAN interface and also able to
                      run snort flawless.
