Smite and applaud list

Digital karma is a very confusing phenomenon… I try not to care, but...
PS - Seriously, who would downvote KOM?! :)
I would. And probably have at some point along the way. Have probably given most of the regulars here one at some point along the way. What's the point in even having it if it's not to be used. But I don't engage in karma wars. It's bad karma.
Some kid didn't like something he said and click, click, click every time they were on the page.. Or its not all that hard to write a script to do it.. Kom would you like your neg to hit 1000 really quick? ;) hehehe
Don't get me started man. I have background in web load/stress testing. Could put you all over the moon in a matter of minutes.
Not that it would take much experience. Like John said. Nothing some punk kid couldn't do.Allowing anyone to view who gave a +/- on karma would open the door for retaliation over meaningless Internet points. Far too many downsides and little to no benefit to knowing who did it.
Not even admins can see who clicked applaud/smite, but we can edit the numbers directly.
I sort of like the way it's done at DSL reports on a per post basis. There, everyone can see the quantity per post, but only the poster can see who gave them. Also for most forums only up votes are enabled.
In the DSL reports scheme I'd prefer the down votes be enabled also, but also not show the poster who they are by to avoid karma wars.
Is much more useful I think to see what post are liked and disliked. Than just an unassociated overal user karma. The user karma ratings here far as I am concerned are meaningless because they are not associated with anything. No way to tell if some users karma rating is frivolous.

My actual number should prob be more in the teens.. ;)
And mine should be about +10000/-0.
-
Yeah. I still get a few per week. Love ya'.

My Ratio is better than your Derelict?? Yeah that doesn't make lot of sense… I am way more likely to post something that pisses someone off ;)
"over meaningless Internet points"
Meaningless - you mean they are nothing more than reddit karma?? I thought the ratio was the actual of length of your e-penis? Well WTF??
-
My own opinion is it should be positive only, to only provide a happyness feeling in the community.
If negative is allowed, I think allowing it to be done anonymously and without a reason just is inviting abuse.

over meaningless Internet points
They're not meaningless. In a tech forum, the karma score can show you who is helpful & dedicated vs Joe Rando who just popped in and is spouting nonsense replies. Low karma does not equal bad advice, but high karma tends to consistently have the correct information.

Or a clique of people boosting each other. Or people inflating their own, etc. The karma ratings here are useless. Even John presents evidence of that.

One vote up/down per message so that others can see which messages are valued, and is used to make up a posters karma +/- I think would be much more useful and due to the one vote up/down per message helps keep it from being abused.

Well, since they're apparently useless, why are we wasting time talking about them at all then?

To inform those who seem to think they are meaningful just how useless they are. Also to provide input on what would make them meaningful and useful. This is after all the "feedback" forum.

Poorly played. Much lack of understanding very apparent of value of discussion and feedback.
Our opinions are just as valid as yours. We lack understanding because we don't agree with you? :(

Likewise. And I'm sharing my opinion. Then KOM suddenly wants the thread closed rather than discussing. A very typical response used to squelch opposition when ones position is weak.

You misunderstood what KOM meant. "/thread" was meant in jest, like an online forum version of a mic-drop.
He definitely wasn't literally requesting that we shut down this thread.

So now you are the voice of KOM?
If KOM's close thread request was in jest then there are ways to make that clear with more than a dozen emoji cons to chose from. Usually when people request a thread lock they are not joking. And mods don't seem to take it as a joke.

I cannot believe that this thread has gotten so silly so quickly.
Yes, I was joking.
No, I did not want the thread closed.
Can we stop arguing about this nonsense now, please? I'm regretting ever replying in the first place.

I don't feel that providing feedback for improvements is silly at all.
As for nonsense needing to be stopped. You're the one making jokes rather than providing serious input on how the ratings system could be improved.
As for your involvement in the thread. Only you can control that.

Actually Id like to know why a smite happened. But then again I couldn't really care less.
edit= and as I come back to edit "why" to "what comment contributed" I see I got my first smite.. ;D ;D ;D
LMAO!

And after re- certifying for a particular "over the shoulder snooping test yesterday- my wife begins laughing from behind me as I posted that. :o
