All of the Sk ports are on the motherboard.  The Msk ports are on a PCIE adaptor card that could be replaced with one from a x750e model.

It is mostly likely that a capacitor or other chip has begun to fail and is giving you the port failures.

You could probably replace the main board with one from a x550e add the msk card and swap the CPU and memory and have a fully working system.

However given the age of the X-core-e boxes and the fact that pfsense 2.4 will be 64bit only, you should really look into a replacement such as the XTM 5 series.

The XTM 5 is 64bit and the processor can be upgraded with a bit of work to a quad core xeon if you wish. A dual core will slot straight in.  You can also install a SATA SSD without problem, allowing you to run a full install.

2.4 will also do away with nano images I believe.

I hate even mentioning the model number of these boxes as they are all the same under the hood other than a slight motherboard difference here and there..

Ive got two of these (4 port 550 and an 8 port 750/1250) sitting on a desk unused for the last two years. I wont even let them go out due to the fact I don't trust them anymore. Maybe for parts but that would be it. Most likely they are coming apart and going to the recycler.

My very first 550 was a warranty replacement and only ran for 9 months as a Watchguard before it was replaced. It was one of the last X-e series to ever ship. It is now over 5 years old and getting really old by standards. Still does about a TB a month through it..  I surely wouldn't trust it for mission critical or even to work in front of any business network these days..  Most of these units out there are much older.

So "Buyer Beware" and "Caveat emptor" and all that comes with that.  Yes the motherboard is most likely going to need replacement.

Is there any bios work i would have to do on the xtm 5 series? like the x1250 e i had to install the opened bios etc..... is there tutorials for this

Everything you need to know about the XTM 5 series can be found here:

              https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/PfSense_on_Watchguard_Firebox#XTM_5

              and

              https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=43574.0

The model numbers make no difference a 505 , 510 etc  they are all the same.

I believe 525 models are a second generation.

You do not need to flash the replacement bios that stephenw10 created but if you do you gain access to the bios.  In the default configuration the bios is totally read only.

Instructions for the flashing the bios are here:

              https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=43574.msg337492#msg337492

You flash the bios from within PfSense once you are up and running.

To boot PfSense write a 64bit nano image and away you go.  If you install an SSD use the full install serial image, write that to a compact flash and then allow the installer to install to the SSD.  When you are asked to reboot, simply power off and remove the Cf card to allow it to boot from the SSD instead.

Actually this is more updated-    due to some changes in how things work.    From command prompt.

                pkg

                pkg install flashrom

                rehash

                cd tmp

                fetch https://sites.google.com/site/pfsensefirebox/home/xtm5_83.rom

                md5 xtm5_83.rom

                flashrom -w xtm5_83.rom –programmer internal

If you're installing to SSD then using the USB-serial installer image. If you're booting from CF use the NanoBSD image.

Thanks Guys….Got my xtm 5 not sure what number lol 520 i thought i seen 535 has 2 gigs and a dual core E something with a 1gig flash anyway way much better and faster boot times it seems also got most everything set up except fan speed cant seem to figure it out tried WPXepc doesn't work. Something different for these boxes?

                      Rob

Just something i wanted to ask....Do i need to update or flash the bios and anything on the fans would be great i am wondering if i should have put the 32bit image on the hard drive instead of 64bit

You do not (should not) need to do anything to the BIOS to make this work.  64bit image is correct.  The BIOS has terrific control for the fans. You do not use the WGX program for that if that was what your leading up to..

WGXepc should be able to control the fans to some extent on the XTM5. Unless maybe if the newer model has different values so it's not recognised.
The XTM5 has thermal control on the SuperIO chip and that's the default value. The only thing you can set with WGXepc is the minimum speed value so it will usually ramp the fans down to a lower speed but might not if the CPU loading is high enough.

Yes, After looking around I am almost 100% that i have the xtm 535 or 545 series it came with 2 gigs of ram dual core E5300 2.6 so its not so loud i cant use it but wonder if this unit has its own thermal sensors

Almost certainly it does. I believe it's the same board as the first gen.

What does WGXepc report if you run it without any switch? It should say 'XTM5 found', if it doesn't it will never try to make any changes.
