      Hello.
I'm new to this and are "just" jumping out on this on a old computer that I just bought for this peepers.

I was talking whit another techie about my little project and he said that if I could I should try to instal the Cisco Linux kernel in my install.

So my question is now is that possible and where do I get my hands on that kernel and last but not least how do I install the kernel in the install?

      Best regards
      Jonas

What does this have to do with pfSense and why you ask it on pfSense forums?

I am working an a pfsense router.

I got told that I could try to change the kernel in pfsense from the stock kernel to the Cisco kernel so I had a pfsense install whit the Cisco kernel so I could get "the best from both worlds" kinda setup.

But I don't know if it's possible or not and wanted to ask before I destroy my setup.

Whatever you can do there the end result would not be pfSense. You will probably get better responses from whatever forums exist for this "Cisco kernel."

In any case with a proper configuration backup and known-good installation media for the version of pfSense you are running you are never more than about 5 minutes away from being right back to where you are now. Just run quick/easy install and restore the config.

              Thanks for the help.

I will try and see if there's a forum for Cisco kernel work and take it from there.

Or you could just ask this tech buddy what he is talking about - sounds like he is talking out his ass if you ask me.  the Cisco Kernel is a proprietary kernel that will only run on "cisco" hardware.. Are you trying to install pfsense to some "cisco" hardware?

The thing is that the one there told me this was the one I bought some computer components from on a side like Craig's list and not some one I know.

No my setup is Intel based whit a Intel board a Q6600. So no Cisco other than the WLAN card.

Well sounds like the guy was talking out his ass.. I would just forget you got such stupid advice.  Think you can run some "cisco" kernel on some components you bought off some site is just nonsense..  Pfsense is based on freebsd..

Consider yourself lucky and don't have as an advisor any more.

Just try plain pfSense and you'll have a firewall that would measure up to most alternatives, including Cisco.

                        Okay.

Thanks for all the help. I will stick to plan pfsense.
I just thought it could be fun if I could do it.

The original reason to get the machine together was to play around whit pfsense and nothing else.
but if I could combine it whit Cisco could it be perfect now that I am trained in Cisco.

Use Cisco Packet Tracer for that if you don't have access to the genuine hardware.

… the Cisco Linux kernel ...

How much sense would it make to install a 3rd party Linux kernel in a FreeBSD system?
Is it supposed to work at all? I doubt that but I'd be interested to hear otherwise.

As I stated in the start. I'm new so there's a lot of stuff I don't know.
I heard a statement of a thing I could try and that's what I'm investing right know.
so far the answer is no chance of working.

                                  And VPP???

Google for Netgate VPP and you can find articles, discussions and so on. e.g. this twitter:

In the first link to about vpp it stated that it works on Ubuntu, cantos and derbian.
also that it's a open source version of Cisco.

Also a statement I found on twitter was that pfsense 3.0 might be build on it.

So I don't see how it helps me now?

ouch, thank god my daytime job keeps me (way too…) busy. I'm really running behind current IT technologies it seems. But IT is not my main focus (SDVoE etc is, though). I guess that's part of what is called "getting old"...  :(

On the other hand: you learn something new every day.
                                        Thanks guys!
