New User... Slow Upload Speed
-
Hi all,
I am wondering why my upload speed in my PFSense box is slow.
I am configuring my PFSense box and have ran a speedtest on ookla. My Ping 11ms and download 192.77 Mbps are OK but my upload speed is really low (0.8 Mbps).
Currently I have my old network running in parallel and the result are pretty much the same except I get 19.29 Mbps upload. (as expected)
I have a 200/20 Mbps connection. So I guess I can rule out my ISP.I browsed this forum and found that the MTU could cause this. So I determined the max MTU before fragmentation to be 1472 thus I have set 1500 in the WAN interface page.
These are my LAN firewall rules. No traffic shaping done.
I also tried different interface combinations (since I have 6 in total) for WAN and LAN but they all result in the same low upload speed.
I started from a fresh install running version 2.4.3_1.
System : Gigabyte z370n-wifi, i5 8500, 8Gb DDR4 and Intel i350-t4 NIC.Thanks.

What type of Internet connection do you have? 1500 is common for cable, but ADSL usually requires 1492.
-
I have cable... determined the MTU using the ping method.
Ping www.google.be -f -l 1472 is the highest value ping command without fragmentation.
-
One other thing, a slightly smaller MTU will not cause a significant decrease. The problem likely lies elsewhere.

Wiring issue? Duplex issue?colored text

Found the problem. Purchased 5 cat7 patch cables. Tested them all with a wire ethernet connection tester and all were fine but 1 of them fails somehow when in use. Replaced it with an other one and the issue is solved. Thanks for all the help.

One thing, CAT 7 cable is not needed. CAT 5e is rated at 1 Gb for 100 metres, so a short 5e patch cord should certainly be good enough.
-
I know cat7 is overkill but Price difference was not That high compared to cat6.

How about compared to 5e?

There is no reason for cat 6 or 6a or 7... 5 and 5e is fine for gig.. Its right in the spec.. When gig came out the point of it was to be able to run it over existing cable - which was 5.. There would be zero reason to run 6 or 6a or for that matter 7 for this users issue. And it sure is not the reason that they are not able to get gig.
If he picked up 7 that is fine, but it was for sure not needed, and really for a patch cable it was just wasted extra money be it 1 penny or 10$ difference.

Yep, Gb was designed before 5e, so works fine on 5. I really get annoyed at those who say you need 6 or 7, when plain old 5 is good enough. I have cabled some offices with CAT 6, but there they might eventually go to 10 Gb, though it's more likely they'd be rewiring sooner. Of course, this sort of nonsense isn't limited to cable. I've heard plenty of other nonsense over the years.
BTW, as for existing cable, there's a bit of interesting history with StarLAN, which became 10baseT and how it was designed to work over existing CAT 3 phone cable, along side phones.

I just thought why not buy the CAT7 cable... That way I kinda future proved my cable collection ...
Anyway, thanks for all the help. Really nice these is a lot of support, even for new users like me.
Thanks again. -

Thanks again.Maybe you want to read this article.:
"As of 2017 there is no equipment that has connectors supporting the Class F (Category 7) channel.
Category 7 is not recognized by the TIA/EIA."
Many people advocate something like this, without knowing the details. Last year, I was at a customer's site. They had a Cisco switch and CAT 6 cabling. She got annoyed that I used CAT 5e to connect my computer to the switch. She seemed to think that would drag down the entire network, as she didn't realize that 5e was good enough and also, every port on a switch was an independent circuit.
The latest O;Reilly Ethernet book has a lot of useful info on this.

Who was she exactly? Was she good looking? hehehe Clearly her technical expertise was not much involved in getting the job ROFL ;)

It was a vet clinic and her husband was the vet. Apparently he was an expert because he read some magazines. ;-)
She wasn't bad looking though.

Ah... Ok makes more sense now. It was your typical user not someone in IT at some company location..

My cats don't chew on braided cables and nearly all braided cables on Amazon are CAT7. Which sucks because I don't want STP.

Are they named CAT 5, CAT 6 etc.? :-)

Coincidentally, we're one shy of our 7th cat... Even the braided cables will no longer be safe. Colored split-loom it is. They don't chew on split-loom, but I hate how it looks.
