There is no reason for cat 6 or 6a or 7... 5 and 5e is fine for gig.. Its right in the spec.. When gig came out the point of it was to be able to run it over existing cable - which was 5.. There would be zero reason to run 6 or 6a or for that matter 7 for this users issue. And it sure is not the reason that they are not able to get gig.

If he picked up 7 that is fine, but it was for sure not needed, and really for a patch cable it was just wasted extra money be it 1 penny or 10$ difference.

Yep, Gb was designed before 5e, so works fine on 5. I really get annoyed at those who say you need 6 or 7, when plain old 5 is good enough. I have cabled some offices with CAT 6, but there they might eventually go to 10 Gb, though it's more likely they'd be rewiring sooner. Of course, this sort of nonsense isn't limited to cable. I've heard plenty of other nonsense over the years.

BTW, as for existing cable, there's a bit of interesting history with StarLAN, which became 10baseT and how it was designed to work over existing CAT 3 phone cable, along side phones.

Maybe you want to read this article.:

"As of 2017 there is no equipment that has connectors supporting the Class F (Category 7) channel.

Category 7 is not recognized by the TIA/EIA."

Many people advocate something like this, without knowing the details. Last year, I was at a customer's site. They had a Cisco switch and CAT 6 cabling. She got annoyed that I used CAT 5e to connect my computer to the switch. She seemed to think that would drag down the entire network, as she didn't realize that 5e was good enough and also, every port on a switch was an independent circuit.

The latest O;Reilly Ethernet book has a lot of useful info on this.

It was a vet clinic and her husband was the vet. Apparently he was an expert because he read some magazines. ;-)

                She wasn't bad looking though.

Ah... Ok makes more sense now. It was your typical user not someone in IT at some company location..

My cats don't chew on braided cables and nearly all braided cables on Amazon are CAT7. Which sucks because I don't want STP.

Are they named CAT 5, CAT 6 etc.? :-)

Coincidentally, we're one shy of our 7th cat... Even the braided cables will no longer be safe. Colored split-loom it is. They don't chew on split-loom, but I hate how it looks.
