Is your ISP using PPPoE, do you intend to use VPNs, IPS/IDS or any other heavy packages? Then you might be surprised how much some stuff can tax a CPU on gigabit connections. And you can still virtualise stuff, as I have written above.

@grimson, No My ISP does not use PPOPE, I'm on Cox Gigablast and have the ONT on the wall. My current Netgeat 6300V2 does not have any authentication methods for me to receive internet. I can directly plug in a computer to the ONT and recieve internet access. I honestly do not know what I plan on using yet. Since this is my home connection. I do work at home a few days of the month so i would need to make sure that the vpn anyconnect from cisco works properly but i can always test that. I've google top X pfsense modules and just did some light reading

hmm I always though that FreeBSD was based off of Unix. Nothing to be sorry about.

linux and bsd both are derived from unix and are unix-like OSes ;) Lets call them siblings/cousins with a unix being common to both of them in their history.
Here is a family tree ;) Linux is a clone of Unix and is "unix-like" But BSD is not Unix.. They share history is all.

Since you have that hardware already I would suggest you try it and see.
Configuring VLANs to get 2 (or more) interfaces is not that difficult and I would consider it far preferable to using a USB NIC.
That said some people do use USB NICs without issue though I very much doubt you would see full Gigabit line rate through it.

yes, the hades canyon is ridiculous overkill and spec'd with hardware that makes no sense in a firewall. but, the other machine just isn't right for a gigabit pfsense firewall. if you want full bandwidth it probably makes sense to get another machine with more sensible specs and use the hades canyon for its intended purpose.

@vamike Honestly the Hades canyon was a impulse buy along with a Lenovo X1 Carbon i7 that i'm regretting. Not due to money just ... what am I going to do with them lol. #firstworldproblems

The Hades Canyon has 2 intel Nic's 1 is a i219-lm the other i210-at. I can tell you at the time of writing this my system under full download speeds running suricata never goes above 10% CPU. This is a beast
