My apologies I'm not a hundred percent sure I understand what you mean. they are separate 802. 1q vlans off of the same interface. I have them set as different interfaces within pfSense.
Yep- and each VLAN interface should have its own subnet.
What are the IP addresses of your ROKU and of your remote device?
Have you set the address of the ROKU box manually in the remote device?
What is the remote device?
-
Let's say the Roku is 192.168.20.20/24 and the remote device, my Android phone, is 192.168.10.20/24, I am using DHCP, but have a static mapping for both.
-
If your using private addresses for both units there is nothing to be worried about by putting those addresses here.
But the last two questions still..
Have you set the address of the ROKU box manually in the remote device? (how does the remote device know how to find the ROKU?)
What is the remote device?
-
I understand that, no I have not tried manually setting them statically. By remote device I assume you mean my Android phone using the Roku app remote app, no?
-
Have you asked Roku?

Yes your Android device!
Set the address of your ROKU box manually in the Android device and see if that works.
-
You do not have to statically set the address of the ROKU as long as your DHCP server will always set its address to the same in this case. You have done right by how you have assigned the box in DHCP.

@chpalmer I'll check them out thanks a lot

"Both devices must be connected to the same network to communicate successfully. "
I just don't buy it, I feel like that is what they just tell the average consumer. I have no issues chrome casting using avahi to my stereo receiver on the same network as the Roku.

You tried to set the address of the ROKU box manually within the Android app with no luck??
Ive seen mixed comments on that so that's why I ask.
-
Right. THEY know what is required. If they don't want to tell you then you have to find out. If I wanted to dissect that I would put a switch in between two devices on the same network and see what discovery method they use. You could also do it by seeing what the app is sending without a Roku device to talk to. There might be multiple discovery methods attempted that you wouldn't see if the first one succeeds for instance.
Once that is determined, you just make pfSense do that if possible.
Bzzzt. RFC1918 address space ends at 172.31.255.255, not 172.32.255.255.

Connect to your Roku device manually.
At the bottom of the discovery screen, tap Connect Manually and enter the IP address of your Roku device. You can find the IP address by visiting Settings > Network > About on your Roku device.Does this work?
-
I did try this and I saw a lot of mdns ssdp, I'll keep looking but it's driving me nuts in my time is limited. I wonder if snort is getting in the way. I'll check that too, I'll let you all know thank you.
-
Then avahi should work unless they deliberately make it not work. Definitely check the snort block list if blocking is turned on.

Will do thank you @Derelict I would definitely consider paying 4 a support contract if we're less expensive, I'm still learning the network side of things and have a lot to learn. this is the best way but sometimes I get stuck. Maybe a support contract with a limited amount of tickets? Is there a limit now for the standard professional? If anyone knows..
