2.3 release needed for testing
-
Hi,
I need this image for an urgetn upgrade project pfSense-CE-memstick-2.3-RELEASE-amd64.img
is there someone who can help? -

The usual caveats apply. Don't use this for production. Only trust what you get from Netgate. This image may have been altered. Etc etc etc.
-
thanks, KOM - of course all caveats apply
only issue is that I need the memstick version to put in on a bootable usb stick and they don't have it there - I checked also the parent directorydo you (or anybody else) have any other source?

Netgate no longer allows access to older versions. If you can't find it online then you're going to have to beg someone for it.
What is it you're testing that requires 2.3 specifically? Also, unless I'm mistaken, you can still write that 2.3 ISO image to your USB stick. You don't specifically need the memstick version for that.
-
@kom I have an old live version on 2.3 with a lot of custom stuff and I want to test the upgrade procedure before upgrading the system.
I'm reading about your last point now, I think I should be able to make it bootable from another pfsense
thanks :) -
@kom I can't seem to find any way to make the iso bootable on USB
is there anyone out there who has a memstick version of the 2.3 release? -
The only thing I could do for you is pfSense-CE-memstick-2.3.5-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz

-
@rico thanks, but that doesn't help me :(
-
https://rufus.ie/
This is the util I use to burn bootable ISOs to USB.
-
@kom I use that too, but it requires the memstick version. when I use the .iso version, it says it's not bootable
-
In *nix it's simple as
dd bs=4M if=pfSense-CE-2.3-RELEASE-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdx
-Rico
-
@rico ok, I've just dome exactly that. it converts the iso into an img, but since the original iso is not bootable, also the resulting img is not bootable
-
there must me someone with a 2.3.0 memstick out there.
netgate has it, can someone from netgate help me? -
OK, I just went to the effort of grabbing that pfSense-CE-2.3-RELEASE-amd64.iso file. I then created a simple FreeBSD 11 vm in VMware Workstation. I attached the ISO to the DVD drive. Voila, it booted just fine.
I don't know what you're doing but you must be doing something wrong. Is your device set to BIOS mode or UEFI mode? I've had trouble booting a USB drive on Dell blades with UEFI mode enabled.
-
thanks for your efforts and support, KOM
I know... the scenario involving a VM works
I need to install it on a physical server, tho - with a bootable usb stick
if you try to make a bootable usb stick with Rufus, it gives the error I showed earlier "this image is either non-bootable, ..." -
There is no practical difference between booting on ISO off of a virtual DVD drive and booting that same ISO off of a USB stick, unless your hardware has some issue like BIOS vs UEFI, as I previously said.
-
I'm not questioning the theory. I'm questioning the practice: if I try to make a bootable USB with Rufus, it just doesn't do it!
-
Use your favorite image/backup software, take an image/backup of the current system and restore it to the HDD of the testing system. This way you are also sure you didn't forget to replicate a setting/modification.
