@johnpoz oh about that. It's a long story. ISPs in Egypt don't have tons of network features like ipv6 or port forwarding. We got ISP locked WAN and many disasters. I thought pfsense might help in any way

If your behind a carrier grade nat, pfsense not going to fix that. You could use a HE tunnel to get IPv6..

But what exactly do you think having IPv6 gets you - name 1 major resource that is ONLY available IPv6... While sure IPv6 is at some point the future.. That future is not today - your not missing out on anything not having it.. My ISP doesn't have it - don't care.. While I work in networking and security and do this also for my hobby, I can just fire up a hurricane electric tunnel for IPv6.. So now I can do whatever I want with IPv6 - but its sure isn't a requirement for anything.

You could do the same thing without pfsense, if you want IPv6 you can just tunnel to your windows or linux OS..

I don't get how someone with zero understanding of networking, even cares..

If you want to replace your current router and play with pfsense - have at it.. Get some old pc with a couple of nics and have it.. Buy a netgear appliance!!! The sg-1100 would be perfect entry into having a real router/firewall - is very reasonable in price.

Or!! strap on your learning hat and learn about how to run VMs on your box and use them as a router.. But you can not turn it off while wanting to use it.. And don't try to dual boot it on your machine using a usb disk..

@johnpoz sir you keep taking examples I give as serious things I want. All I want is a upnp, working nat, static network options. I know everything you said about ipv6.
I am just giving it a try maybe nothing would work because it's all ISP locked features.
Btw hi I'm software and network engineering student, second college year. So thanks for that. I learned some pfsense basics

Great. Setup pfSense in a VM and see how it works. That's what I do when testing s new feature etc.

if your isp router is locked down!!! Putting any router behind it is going to get you NOTHING!! You can for example turn on UPnP all day long on a router behind your isp router... Not going to do anything for you..

If your isp router doesn't allow bridge mode where pfsense gets a public IP, or at min say a dmz host where all traffic is forwarded to said IP behind the router.. There is nothing you can do for inbound stuff like port forwards or UPnP

Yeah the only thing you could do is setup a tunnel to some other location where you do have full control of the inbound connection. However I'm aware that's probably an issue in Egypt, it will be hard to impossible.

And don't forget the skillset of the user..

Your best bet would be to run a vpn client on your pc if what your after is circumvention of outbound policies or dns rules.. For inbound stuff - whole different level of skillsets required, and vpn services that supports it even (not many do) or the ability to run your own vps somewhere out on the public internet and set it all up yourself.. Skillset going to be issue in this case, etc.

What do you want to know dude, if your isp is locked down to prevent inbound traffic, there is nothing pfsense can do to fix that.. Run a vpn that supports inbound traffic if that is what your after.
