      System
      Intel dual core 2.6
      8Gb ram
      500 GB HHD
      1 Wan Nic
      1 LAN Nic
      lates Pfsense os

      Packages installed
      pfbocker Devlevel

I have ran pfsense for about 2 weeks. all was good. then all of a sudden the gateway default changed from ISP gateway to some funky 172.9.10.7
I can't delete or change the ip to My ISP. Also, the machine kept freezing. So I made a completely new pfsense Box. rebuilt the OS. and as soon as I add the MAC address to get my static IP it did it again. and a factory reset will not fix it. and no way no how can I get the ip address to change back to the ISP gateway.

I have scoured the interweb. found a 2009 reference for something similar, but referred to more of a dual WAN setup.

The gateway is your upstream router. Or should I say your ISP's gateway router. That address seems to come back to Uverse?

        Los Angeles area?

If your internet connection is working then I would not worry about it. They seem to be doing something on their end.. upgrades.. repairs.. ect.

          Hi chpalmer
no, the internet just died out of the blue, and then when I redid everything I had a dynamic IP and as soon as I set the mAC address for the static IP the Gateway changed and I could not change it back to what it was. even after a factory reset.

            Describe your setup.

Are you trying to bypass the supplied ISP router?

            Are you a Uverse customer?

What should your gateway be if you know?

WAN address static or DHCP? are you having trouble setting your pfsense manually? Im trying to figure out how you think you would "change it back to what is was"..

            Have you contacted your ISP?

Simple WAN to LAN. pfsense is setup as a router/firewall/gateway/web filter
I would like to get the ISP gateway Ip back. which is 207.194.?.? or 66.183.?.?
              not 172.9.10.7

@J0hn-Lav3ry said in this is freaking weird. Gateway IP change out of the blue to 172.9.10.7:

                not 172.9.10.7

                Says who...

Your gateway is going to be whatever your ISP hands you! Is your wan set to dhcp on pfsense? Which it must be if your gateway is changing. Why don't you contact your ISP... If gateway IP does fall into the IP /mask that pfsense gets then you will want to check the box that allows for that.. But that might only come into play when your setting your gateway via static.

You do understand ISP change IP ranges all the time and point users to different gateways during maint, or changes, etc. etc.

Pfsense isn't going to out of the blue change its freaking IP to some rando... Sniff on your wan and release and renew your lease and look for yourself what your ISP is handing you.

yes I understand ISP changes. but the 172. is a dead ip no internet or anything. and not in the ISP ips. it is like pfsense is assigning it somehow. not the ISP. the gateway is dynamic. I tried to make it static to get the 172 gone. but no go. the 172 kept coming back.
another note is I have setup a Mikrotik router temporarily and it is working fine with static IP and dynamic gateway.

Set your wan to dhcp - what do you get.. Sniff!! What is handed you - maybe your suppose be getting a whole new IP and gateway.. But if you have IP set to static then yeah not going to work.

That IP is owned by AT&T - is that your ISP?

Keep in mind that AT&T buys companies all the time ;)

Your going to have to contact your ISP... pfsense doesn't just randomly pick some IP to use as its gateway... It got it from somewhere!! Mistake on your ISP side, one of their customers running a dhcp server when not suppose to, etc.

I talked to the ISP again. and they are thinking it is the switch I have plugged in between the fiber and routers. I won't be able to confirm until closing time. I will post my results tomorrow.

This would be a really weird thing to happen to a simple 8 port switch. but I'm open to the possibility.

                          Thanks again for the help.

Don't buy switch either... Its just s dumb switch right? Not a L3 that could of been running dhcpd?

Any info you can share will be great, not just for us curious - but maybe the next guy that finds this thread because he running into sim issue.

Good thing is you got it sorted.

So you took the switch out and your gateway went back to normal? Or the isp did something? A sniff would of be very useful info..

yes, I tested the routers 1 at a time directly into the fiber. not all at once with a new switch. I will do that in about 30 min. after I close the doors.
