freebsd support for wifi 5 - I don't even think is a thing. Let alone 6.

freebsd and wifi not a good mix.. The suggest advice of getting an AP to use is be the best advice your going to get to be honest.

Take whatever money you were going to spend on some card, and put it towards your AP.. You will be way happier in the long for sure.

Combining the AP with the router has never been a good idea - for starters it rarely allows you to correctly place the AP for best coverage.. And even if you can, doesn't look very good.

If you want good wifi, ie you talking 6 for example. Then get a AP that supports that, that you can actually place where it best makes sense for best coverage of the area you want wifi in. If you need more coverage - you get more AP.. etc..

edit: Do you have wifi6 devices, while its always fun to have the latest and greatest new thing on the market. Unless you have devices, that will actually take advantage of it. That you will even be able to notice/use correctly. I wouldn't jump on that bandwagon quite yet to be honest. What is the make up of all your wifi devices? Most iot sort of device only do 2.4 for example.. What are you using for wifi now?

Yup, .ac should be along soon (hopefully!) but right now the best you can do is an 802.11N 3x3 card for a theoretical max link speed of 450Mbps.
Use an external AP unless you really have a good reason not to. Or are just doing it for fun. 😉

          max link speed of 450Mbps.

That all said and good ;) What clients have 3x3? Your phone? Your tablet? Your laptop? Iot devices?

They love to throw out these phy values - that are very unlikely to ever be seen or used in real world.. For 450 to be possible you would also need to be using 40 VHT.. Which is not a an official standard for 2.4 N, and almost never without issues trying to leverage it.. A more realistic high end phy for 2.4 is 144.4.. (2 streams, 20 VHT) So real world with a 2 stream client you typical see in the 70mbps range.. The use of 5ghz N on freebsd has been problematic as well, in the past.. Maybe that has been overcome? And you could see a 300 PHY?

While sure it might be "fun" for some people to use a crappy wifi connection with a speed less than fast ethernet ;) I am more in the line of having fun having good stable wifi, with speeds reflective of current technology..

To be honest some $20 wifi router used as AP would give you a better experience then trying to do wifi AP on your freebsd router..

            Yeah, like I said...for fun! 😄

I have seen over 300Mbps in a real test to an Atheros 3x3 N card from a MBP. When it was very close. And there were no other clients. One time!

Was a calculation error in what you were using to do the math ;)

Even with 3 streams, and 450 PHY... lets call it 60% of PHY for real world.. Your at 270.. For 300 you would be at 67% of PHY.. There is no way that could be sustained, even if was a instantaneous value for a few packets, etc..

Your definition of fun is different than mine lets say ;) hehehe - getting shit speeds on old tech, just because can get it to work isn't my idea of fun.. When can get current speeds for $20 and really zero effort..

Indeed, for some definitions of "fun".

I'd have to lookup that test, I remember being impressed at the time, I must have noted it somewhere. Can't argue with math though!
I recall specifically it was faster than the previous best I had seen with a 2x2 card which implied the client must be using it. I hadn't really expected it.

                  .....and the math doesn't lie!

I was actually seeing ~215Mbps from an indicated 405Mbps link speed.
That was still ~30% faster than the 2x2 card I had been using. That was over 3 years ago.

That was using a SparkLAN WPEA-127N (AR9380 3x3:3) which is still about the best card you will find that pfSense can use.

                    That is believable ;)

Don't get me wrong.. Playing with different hardware and seeing what it can do, would fall into my list of fun as well..

But I don't take it that is what the OP is actually looking to do. And in my personal opinion - putting any sort of wifi card into your router, even if it was latest and greatest AX capable. Which clearly its not going to be with freebsd as the base os.. To use as your wifi AP for your network is exercise in futility.. And not going to provide anywhere close to the wifi experience you could have with doing it correctly with actual APs

Other than playing around.. What is fun is a stable, fast, reliable wifi network for all of your devices.. That you really should never have to mess with.. And your devices connect to without issue and good signal no matter where they are at in the house.. Be it in the same room with your router, or in the west wing library ;) Now maybe you get that with some wifi card you put in your router.. But from experience - that is not very likely.. Save yourself a lot of grief and future issues, and take whatever money you were going to put towards some card to stick in your router and get an actual AP.. Or even some off the shelf wifi router you use as just an AP..

I thank you for these various and varied responses.
I don't want to be convinced to buy an access point. I already know this subject perfectly.

I have devices that use 2.4 and 5 Ghz

I just ask if there is a mini pcie card for wifi6.
Otherwise which card compatible in recent version wifi 5 2.4 and 5Ghz

Since this card SparkLAN WPEA-127N (AR9380 3x3:3), Is there a better, newer wifi card? faster?

                      Thanks a lot

No. Not one that is currently supported. No 802.11AX. No 802.11AC.

The bwi(4) driver uses the older v3 version of Broadcom’s firmware. While this older firmware does support most BCM43xx parts, the bwn(4) driver works better for the newer chips it supports. You must use the bwi(4) driver if you are using older Broadcom chipsets (BCM4301, BCM4303 and BCM4306 rev 2). The v4 version of the firmware that bwn(4) uses does not support these chips.

PFSense being in 2.5.1 with FreeBSD in 12.2, which WIFI PCIe card is compatible in recent generation to have 2.4 and 5 Ghz. At the moment, Wifi 6 is not accessible, but what could be recent?
The goal is to support my existing AP.

Still the same answer. Nothing has changed in that last 2 weeks. 😉

There is no support 802.11AX or 802.11AC.

You can only use 802.11N and about the best card there is something based on an Atheros AR9380 chip.

@stephenw10 Thanks for this prompt response
Are there other examples of more recent card Mini Pcie? and at Intel?

I assume you want to run the card as an access point? Most of the Intel driver do not support hostap mode so cannot be an access point.
No, there is nothing significantly newer than the Atheros AR9380 that is supported. Yet.
