APU2 Crashing
-
Hello,
I purchased a new APU2C0 board to replace my aging Alix ones. Since day one I've been having crashing problems. Tried different versions of pfsense and they all seem to cause the board to crash just as often.
Attached is crash reportcrash.txt
-
What bios are you running?
There have been a few discussions previously regarding this.
I'm sticking to a known working solution:- Vendor: coreboot
Version: 4.0.7
Release Date: Tue Feb 28 2017*
On multiple APU2d4 units that are solid.
- Vendor: coreboot
-
Any link to steps to do the update?
Found some on github but they seem to post two completely different ways of doing it

Check here :

Here is bootup. I don't see anything directly related to bios version.
Also, even with the heatsink on this board it gets quite hot to touch. My old alix boards never got anywhere near this hot.startup.txt
-
Just tried the TinyCore to update the BIOS. See attached boot up - hopefully it worked?
-
Why are you running 2.3.5? It's no longer supported.
The APU2 will support 64 bit pfSense, but you will need to re-install it from scratch.
-
Download your config
-
Download pfSense-CE-memstick-serial-2.4.4-RELEASE-p1-amd64.img.gz & flash a usb drive
-
Install via memstick usb
-
Re-Load your config.

I started out with the latest version of Pfsense and once I noticed the crashing I figured it was the newer versions of Pfsense so started trying older versions. It seems to run the best on 2.3.5.

Strange.
Last version - 2.4.4p2 is never crashed on me.
2.3.5 is pretty close to 2.4.x, but 16 bits only and end of line, where is 24.4p2 is 64 bits. -
I think you'll find 64 bit to be reliable with the right bios.
2.3.5 will have no future patches, nor updates. -
Will gladly update pfsense once I can get this unit to run stable.
Anyone able to determine if the firmware is the latest now?
-
What firmware ?
How can we tell ? You have the board in front of you .... -
I posted the boot up via putty and serial cable.
-
Ah, Ok.
@Gil posted a link for the APU2 firmware (what ever that is - I don't have one, I'm using a retired Dell PC so I get my BIOS updates from Dell) -
Correct, just wanting someone more familiar with these APU2 to confirm it is updated to the latest version (which I downloaded and ran using TinyCore) by looking at the start up that I posted after the upgrade said complete.

Your web status page will tell you your versions

Also, already had a crash again. Next time it crashes I will retrieve the log. Hesitant to upgrade Pfsense as it was crashing even more often on the latest version
Update crash log is attached.

I have about 10 x APU2D4 units that don't crash.
Perhaps you have a hardware issue with your unit? -
FYI, I upgraded coreboot to v4.0.25 which is the latest legacy version.
(PC ENGINES recommend legacy versions for FreeBSD based systems)
No problems to date. What is you exact hardware?
