Hi i just wonder how a mini itx system would work on pfsense ?? My mind was to try it with a prebuild cpu like the Intel D945GCLF Mini-ITX But i want to hear what you guys think about it ?

My Network speed at this moment is 24/3 Mbit and i will upgrade about a year to this 100/100 and i will use it to serve as my home router and i will be using VPN.

I'm using the same Intel board with my home installation and it's working great. I haven't run any bandwidth tests, but I wouldn't expect any issues at ~25mbit, the load is essentially nil on my 5/1mbit line with lots of states (torrent traffic). I'm running 5 VLANs off the onboard NIC right now (though I have an Intel low-profile NIC coming to replace it) for my WAN and some internal networks. I think you'll need 1.2.3-PRERELEASE if you want to use the internal NIC, but I didn't test 1.2.2 to make sure.

Really the only thing to consider is that the board only has one onboard NIC (and it's a crappy Realtek) and one PCI slot which might not be easily accessible depending on the case you choose. You may need to get a low-profile PCI NIC or a riser card if you want a second NIC, or use a VLAN switch with the Realtek.

ok that dosent sounds too bad. my second thought was to use the VIA EPIA-M700-10E, C7 / 1GHz but I dont now if it is better or worse. but the thing that is good with it is that it has 2 gigabit lan. what do guys think ? then I can use a pci card. I have also seen card card riser with two pci slots on it. How does these work with pfsense ?

I've got this running monowall, it should not have any problems with pfsense

            http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811154091

board has a CF slot on its back, two NIC plus full height PCI slot, nice and very quiet too

All together, it was cheaper then alix

ok I will check on Intel nic. but have you had Realtek RTL8111C to work? would be good to know when I will order my things as quickly as possible. and Realtek RTL8111C not working, then I choose Intel or via if anyone has succeeded with this card? or what is the best choice?

I bought me exactly one IM-945GSE-A and I hope that this will work well. I have to agree with you that this is probably the best motherboard for pfsense today.

                  Thank you very much cheesyboofs

This is definitely a nice option, it's too bad the availability seems to be really poor. The price is a bit high too, but if I could've got this instead of the Intel I would've. Very nice board, and seems to be relatively unique with good NICs (and more than one).

I'm also enjoying this board, a LOT. if you are in the US Logic Supply has it, in stock. it's a bit more change but you know the intel nic's are good stuff!

It's too bad they stopped making that board.  For the price, it couldn't be beat.

                              @ forum,

Did you get pfSense running (well) on the Realtek 8111C NICs? I've been looking at that exact same setup, it's pretty nice. However, I'm not into buying a dedicated machine that won't work for the intended purpose … if you know what I mean ...  ;)

I am running on a Via VB8001 with their new Nano processor. It draws the same as an atom under idle, and has built in encryption acceleration for VPN. It supports PCE-E so I have a dual port Intel card in there. Runs really smooth, and draws less than 40 watts under 'standard' usage.
