Good experience with SG-1100 and Netgate support
-
Thought I'd add some positive feedback on dealing with Netgate support after purchasing their cheapest, smallest product the SG-1100. I'm currently downsizing my homelab from heavy-weight enterprise kit and was curious how low power I could go. It's got several VLANs and about 50 devices. The number of Docker containers outnumber clients like I'm sure with most homelabs here... Wanted to see if a Netgate SG-1100 could replace my 6 year old SuperServer 5018A-FTN4 which I've had good experience with here. The SuperServer has dedicated NICs whereas the SG-1100 has switch ports. This meant that the backup and export didn't quite work. So a quick email to Netgate and they replied literally within 8 minutes offering to manually edit my pfSense config and make it compatible with the SG-1100. I was up and running the same day going from a noisy server consuming 25W to a silent little box consuming 4W. Internet performance (300 down / 50 up) is exactly the same. Of course I'm not routing at gigabit speeds between subnets now - getting more like 500Mbps - with the SuperServer I would get about 700-900Mbps. In case it helps here's the configuration change going from dedicated NICs to a Netgate box with switch ports:
To this on the SG-1100 with switch ports:
And of course the part I missed:
So all in all, thanks Netgate - appreciate the assist on your cheapest unit and super impressed with your free support.
