Hardware check
-
I am back after a long time.
My apologies for seeking hardware advice outside the Netgate store.
I have lost my second PfSense router to another friend of mine for the 2nd time in as many years! Anyway, they were on an old hardware and I was planning an upgrade; because, we have starting planning a home-automation project.
We want to lockdown the network before we do anything on this front.
The Virgin business broadband 500 mb for home is back on their Hitron router, connected to the Cisco Switch serving the whole house. The Unifi AC Pro does the Wifi duties.
Given the home automation project, we certainly require an IDS/IPS system to monitor the network. A decent system is what we require.
I am think of getting a refurbished 4 or 6 cores 10/11 Gen Intel Dell OptiPlex, which is available at Dell outlet for £400-£500. Another alternative is getting a used server from Bargain hardware
I am sure both are more than enough to support the IDS/IPS.
My only concern the Dell server and the CPU are older hardware. I also need to speak to Dell if their OptiPlex will allow me to stick an intel network card.
Please advise what you guys think. Thank you.

That first link is bad so we can't see what it is.
A rack appliance with dual 12core Xeons is massively overpowered for a 500Mbps connection though. In both senses.

I am getting “this post had been marked as spam

Because your post contains links to other sites, it looks like spam.
I upvoted you to rep. 5, try now. -
Thanks mate! Sorry, I can’t. No worries.
The dell is OptiPlex is

Dell KB212-B UK Irish Qwerty QuietKey USB Black KeyboardI will have to reformat, disable the wifi and add the intel network card.
Re-the Dell server from bargain hardware, I meant to add 1 CPU unit only.
I don’t see myself upgrading unless the unit fails. A bit of future proofing should I upgrade my broadband. I will also be setting up a VPN for remote access.
I keep questioning should I rather buy a new hardware than the older ones.

Well with the cost of electricity in the UK being what it is I would be going for that over a rack mount server all day!
-
Brilliant. Thank you Stephen. I will check with Dell
re-room for adding the network card. If I find something cheaper in the OptiPlex range, I will post the spec here for confirmation before purchasing.Have a good week end folks!
Cheers!

Have a look at the Intel NUC Series like: NUC11TNHi30L
Dual Intel 2,5G Cards.

Back to square one; Dell advised me that I can’t
remove the win 10 OS from the machine. It will void the warranty of the machine. I thought the warranty is on the hardware! I will check for a used SFF and post.
Thx -
What? That's crazy!

@stephenw10 Yeah. They asked me to email their technical support team, which also deals with this. They did confirm in writing. It is what it is.
